St. Cloud State Tennis set to Host Winona State at Sta-Fit

Huskies eye 2-0 start
St. Cloud, Minn.-Â St. Cloud State Tennis (1-0) take to the court this Saturday as they host Winona State on February 15. The match is set to start at 12:30 p.m. at the Sta-Fit Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
The Huskies opened up their season two weeks ago as they took on Minnesota Crookston.
St. Cloud State captured the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Crookston took the first match as they came away with a win at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell picked up a 6-3 victory as each team now held a doubles win. At the No. 1 spot, Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki battled against Daniela de Lucas Rivera and Asli Oktay, but would ultimately come away with a 6-4 victory as St. Cloud State would lead 1-0.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, Minnesota Crookston won the first three matches in straight sets as they would now lead 3-1. At the No. 5 spot, Lara-Maria Schaefer got the comeback attempt started for the Huskies with a 7(7)-6(1), 6-3 win. Johana Brower kept the momentum rolling for the Huskies as a straight set victory in the No. 2 spot tied the match at 3-3. The deciding point would come down to the No. 6 spot where freshman Gibby Chapman took on Abril Manas Hernandez. Chapman took the first set 6-3, but Manas Hernadez responded with a 6-4 victory in set two. With the match and game on the line, Chapman came up big for the Huskies with a 6-2 victory for her first collegiate victory. The Huskies started the season in the win column with a 4-3 win against Minnesota Crookston.

Saturday's match against Winona State will be the 56th game between the programs with the Huskies holding a 39-16 advantage. The teams matched up twice last season with the Warriors taking both games.

The first match took place in Winona where the Warriors came up with the 4-3 win.

St. Cloud State won the doubles point as the junior duo of Maria Paz Aoki and Johana Brower won at the No. 2 spot. The duo defeated Lainy Ristau and Elysia Beynon 6-2. Maria Molitor and Brooklyn Broadwell battled back and forth in the No. 3 spot with Ally Burger and Miranda Daulong but came out on top with a 7-5 victory. Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer were defeated 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles spot.
In singles play, the Huskies dropped four of the six matches as the Warriors earned a come from behind victory. Molitor was defeated 2-6, 1-6 at the No. 4 spot by Clara Thoemke as the WSU tied up the match at 1-1. Schaefer picked up her first career victory in the No. 6 spot as she defeated Ally Burger 6-3, 6-0 to give the Huskies a 2-1 advantage. Winona State would pick up the next two points as Brower fell 6-2, 0-6, 7-10 at the No. 3 spot and Paz Aoki fell 3-6, 4-6 in the No. 1 spot. Trailing 3-2 and in need of back-to-back wins, Broadwell captured her second victory of the evening and her first career singles victory as she defeated Elysia Beynon 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 5 spot. With the match tied at 3-3, Muñoz Perez won the first set of her match in the No. 2 spot 6-3 against Skylar Gary. Gary would win the second set 6-2 and send the match to the pivotal third set with the victory on the line. In what was a close third set, Gary would come away with a 10-6 victory, giving Winona State their second win of the season.

The teams played each other later in the season in Winona again where the Warriors once again came up with the victory.

St. Cloud State was defeated in all three doubles matches as they fell into a 0-1 hole. In the No. 1 spot, Claudia Muñoz Perez  and Lara-Maria Schaefer  were defeated 3-6 by Sara Anderson and Skylar Gary. Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki were defeated 3-6 as the Warriors clinched the doubles point. In the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell battled with Elysia Beynon and Clara Thoemke, but were ultimately defeated 6(5)-7(7) in the tiebreaker.
Moving into singles play, the Warriors made quick work of the Huskies as they won the first three matches, all of which in straight sets, to clinch the victory. Paz Aoki was able to pick up a 6-4, 6-3 victory in the No. 2 spot. Muñoz Perez was the only other Husky to capture a victory as she took down Sara Anderson 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 1 spot. Brower was defeated by injury default as she was retired from the match while leading 3-2 in the second set. With four singles victories, the Warriors were able to capture a 5-2 win over the Huskies.

Scouting Winona State
The Winona State Warriors will be opening their spring season with this match against the Huskies. The Warriors came into this season projected to finish to finish 5th in the NSIC after going 8-9 with a 4-5 conference record last season. WSU qualified for the NSIC tournament where they were defeated 4-1 against UMary.

Coming into this season, the Warriors return one of their All-Conference players in Lainy Ristau who was named to the second team singles. Ristau went 10-4 singles as a freshman while going 8-6 in doubles. WSU also returns Skylar Gary who went 6-1 in singles as a freshman and then 6-4 in doubles.

Head Coach Tom Sanvik enters his fourth season with the Warriors in the 2025 season. Sanvik has accumulated a 33-23 record in his tenure with a 19-12 conference mark. He has guided Winona State to the NSIC tournament in each of his three seasons with a trip to the NSIC Championship in his inaugural season.
