St. Cloud, MN. – St. Cloud State Tennis (0-1, 0-0 NSIC) hits the road this weekend as they travel to Rogers, MN to face Bethel on Saturday, February 7. Start time for the match is 2:00 p.m.

Huskies Drop Tight Match to Winona State in Season Opener- January 31, 2026
St. Cloud State opened their day by taking the first doubles match as Lara-Maria Schaefer and Liliana Ruy Sánchez Mendivil came away with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot. In what were two tightly contested matches, the Warriors would come away with 7-5 and 7-6 wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
Moving into singles play, Brooklyn Broadwell would tie up the match with a 6-0, 6-2 straight set win in the No. 5 spot. WSU took the next two matches in the No. 4 and No. 6 spots to take a 3-1 lead. Schaefer brough the Huskies within a point after producing a 7-5, 6-3 win. Winona State would clinch the match with a 7-5, 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot. Sánchez Mendivil gave the Huskies their final point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lainy Ristau, but Winona State would win 4-3 over the Huskies.

NSIC Preseason Poll
Coming into this season, St. Cloud State was projected to finish 10th in the NSIC.
Head Coach Berit Merrill enters her eighth season with the Huskies ahead of the 2026 season. Merrill and the Huskies are coming off a 2025 season where they tallied a 4-11 record and a 1-8 mark in the NSIC.
"I am excited for this season as we have a great mix of newcomers and returners and it will be great to see how they come together as a team and compete," said Merrill.
Sánchez Mendivil enters her first season with the Huskies as a freshman.
"Lili has an incredibly strong work ethic along with her ability to keep a calm headspace on the court makes her a great candidate for our player to watch this season," said Merrill.
St. Cloud State will be returning three players from last years roster to this season in juniors Brooklyn Broadwell and Lara-Maria Schaefer and sophomore Gibby Chapman. Broadwell compiled a 16-14 overall record with an 11-4 mark in doubles play, which was a team-high in doubles wins. Highlighted in her 11 doubles wins was a 10-match winning streak which was the second longest doubles win streak since 2007. Schaefer led the team in total wins last season with 17 and singles wins with 9. She posted a 17-13 overall record last year. Chapman notched a 15-12 overall record with a 9-5 mark in doubles play. She was named NSIC Player of the Week following a 6-0 week across the Huskies annual Florida trip.
Rounding out the roster will be Hannah Oing and Margarita Vinichenko. Oing is a transfer from St. Thomas University and Vinichenko is a freshman.
Preseason Coaches' Poll Results
Saturday's match against Bethel will be the 17th all-time match between the programs with SCSU holding a 14-2 advantage. The teams last played in 2018 where the Royals won 9-0.
Scouting Bethel
The Bethel Royals will be opening their season with Saturday's match against the Huskies. BU is coming off a 2025 season where they went 14-5 with an 8-2 record in the MIAC.
The Royals do return a bulk of their lineup from a season ago in Lauryn Douglas, Claire Keller, Elisabeth Langhus, and Michaella Sullivan. Douglas went 26-10 across singles and doubles. Keller produced a 20-12 record. Langhus tallied a 12-4 mark while Sullivan went 28-8.
Head Coach Drew Fernelius enters his 14th season with Bethel in 2025-26. He holds a 185-83 mark in his tenure.
