
Huskies Drop Tight Match to Winona State in Season Opener

Winona, MN. – St. Cloud State Tennis (0-1, 0-0 NSIC) dropped their season opener 4-3 against Winona State Saturday afternoon. The Huskies would drop the doubles point and come away with three singles wins.
Doubles
St. Cloud State opened their day by taking the first doubles match as Lara-Maria Schaefer and Liliana Ruy Sánchez Mendivil came away with a 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot. In what were two tightly contested matches, the Warriors would come away with 7-5 and 7-6 wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.
Singles
Moving into singles play, Brooklyn Broadwell would tie up the match with a 6-0, 6-2 straight set win in the No. 5 spot. WSU took the next two matches in the No. 4 and No. 6 spots to take a 3-1 lead. Schaefer brough the Huskies within a point after producing a 7-5, 6-3 win. Winona State would clinch the match with a 7-5, 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot. Sánchez Mendivil gave the Huskies their final point of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lainy Ristau, but Winona State would win 4-3 over the Huskies.
