St. Cloud State Tennis Opens Conference Play with Two Road Games

Huskies to play Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State
St. Cloud, Minn.- St. Cloud State Tennis (1-1) open up conference play this weekend as they travel to Virginia, Minn. to face off against Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, February 22 and then to Bemidji State on Sunday, February 23. Saturday's match is set for 10:30 a.m. while Sunday's match will be played at 9:30 a.m.

Last Time Out
The Huskies took to the court this past Saturday where they hosted Winona State.

The Warriors would take all three doubles matches to earn the point. At the No. 3 spot, Brooklyn Broadwell and Gibby Chapman were defeated 6-3. Winona State clinched the doubles point as Skylar Gary and Alexandra Madjun defeated Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer 6-2 in the No. 2 spot. To complete the sweep, Lainy Ristau and Halle Rosentreter defeated Maria Paz Aoki and Johana Brower 6-1.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 deficit, Huskies lost in the No. 5 spot as they now trailed 2-0. Oriana Grott put the first point on the board for SCSU as she took down Elysia Beynon 6-2, 1-6, 10-5 at the No. 4 spot. Winona State came away with two straight set victories at the No. 3 and No. 2 spots to ultimately clinch the match. Muñoz Perez and Schaefer each picked up a straight set victory as the final score would come out to be 4-3.

Saturday's match against Minnesota Crookston will be the 26th all-time meeting between the programs with the Huskies holding a 24-1 record. The teams matched up earlier in the season where the Huskies came away with the victory.
St. Cloud State captured the doubles point after winning two of the three matches. Crookston took the first match as they came away with a win at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot, Oriana Grott and Brooklyn Broadwell picked up a 6-3 victory as each team now held a doubles win. At the No. 1 spot, Johana Brower and Maria Paz Aoki battled against Daniela de Lucas Rivera and Asli Oktay, but would ultimately come away with a 6-4 victory as St. Cloud State would lead 1-0.
Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead, Minnesota Crookston won the first three matches in straight sets as they would now lead 3-1. At the No. 5 spot, Lara-Maria Schaefer got the comeback attempt started for the Huskies with a 7(7)-6(1), 6-3 win. Johana Brower kept the momentum rolling for the Huskies as a straight set victory in the No. 2 spot tied the match at 3-3. The deciding point would come down to the No. 6 spot where freshman Gibby Chapman took on Abril Manas Hernandez. Chapman took the first set 6-3, but Manas Hernadez responded with a 6-4 victory in set two. With the match and game on the line, Chapman came up big for the Huskies with a 6-2 victory for her first collegiate victory. The Huskies started the season in the win column with a 4-3 win against Minnesota Crookston.

Sunday's match against Bemidji State will be the 54th meeting between the programs with SCSU leading 46-7 in the series. St. Cloud State is on a three-match winning streak against the Beavers after extending that streak last season.

The Huskies had a strong start to the match with three wins in doubles. In the No. 1 spot, the international tandem of Claudia Muñoz Perez and Lara-Maria Schaefer defeated Kate Taylor and Valesca Rodriguez 6-2 to put the Huskies in prime position to capture the doubles point. Maria Paz Aoki and Johana Brower clinched the doubles point for the Huskies with a clean 6-0 victory in the No. 2 spot. To put the cherry on top, Maria Molitor and Brooklyn Broadwell came away with a 6-2 victory in the No. 3 spot as St. Cloud State swept the doubles round. All three doubles pairings have started the year with a record of 2-1.

Broadwell completed the sweep for the Huskies with a come from behind 3-6, 6-0, 10-5 win in the No. 5 spot.

Scouting Minnesota Crookston
The Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles come into this match with a 2-2 record while having beaten Bemidji State and Concordia College. Their two losses have come against the Huskies and North Dakota. UMC came into this season projected to finish fifth in the NSIC after going 10-5 with a 5-4 conference record. The Golden Eagles reached the NSIC Tournament where they were defeated 4-3 against Sioux Falls.
Coming into this season, the Golden Eagles return one of their two All-Conference performers from a season ago in Daniella De Lucas Rivera. As a freshman, De Lucas Rivera earned Second Team All-Singles after going 7-2 at the number two doubles spots. Other key returning players for UMC include Nadia Cases Mundet and Kavya Singh. Cases Mundet totaled a 7-2 record in singles play the number 5 spot. Singh went 4-4 in doubles but then partnered with Cases Mundet to go 7-1 in doubles, which was a team best.
Head Coach Josh Lunak enters his fourth season with Minnesota Crookston in 2025. Lunak has totaled a 19-27 record in his tenure, but has increased his win total after every season.

The Bemidji State Beavers come into this match with an 0-3 record having lost to Minnesota Crookston, St. Scholastica, and Minnesota Duluth. The Beavers came into this season projected to finish ninth in the conference following a 2024 season where they went 3-10 with an 0-9 mark in conference play.
