Huskies outshoot Tigers 45-30 in 4-3 setback
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-17-1, 4-14-1 NCHC) led in nearly every statistical category but the scoreboard in a 4-3 loss to No. 20/RV Colorado College (17-13-1, 11-9-1 NCHC) on Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The Huskies took a 2-1 lead in the second period before surrendering three goals in 3:07 in the setback.
SCSU recorded a season-high 45 shots on goal while outshooting the Tigers, 45-30, produced 11 shots on goal in two power plays and turned away CC's only power play chance.
Colorado College took the first lead of the game at the 8:12 mark of the first period when Gavin Lindberg finished an odd man rush with a wrist shot in the slot. The Huskies responded just under two minutes later when junior defenseman Cooper Wylie (Stillwater, Minn.), who returned form injury after missing 10 games, netted his first goal of the season at 10:10. Wylie let a wrist shot go from above the left dot and beat Tiger goalie Kaidan Mbereko over his left shoulder for the score.
The second period was a high-scoring affair which featured five goals, beginning with the Huskies taking a 2-1 lead on a shot from sophomore forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) between the right dot and slot off a feed from sophomore forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta). The lead didn't last for long though, however, as the Tigers tied the score, took the lead and extended their lead to two goals with three goals in just over three minutes between the 9:05 and 12:12 marks. Freshman forward Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.) responded two minutes later by cutting the lead to one with his fourth goal of the season, as he grabbed the puck after a faceoff win from Gross and roofed a backhand shot into the back of the net.
In the third period, SCSU outshot CC 15-8 but couldn't find the equalizer to force overtime.
