Moreno and Navratil named to first team and all-defensive team, Castro and Nelson named to second team
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Baseball had four student-athletes earn Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) honors, as the league announced their season awards on Tuesday. Redshirt junior Liam Moreno (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and senior Ethan Navratil (Albany, Minn.) earned first team honors, while sophomore Wilmis Castro (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and redshirt junior Brady Nelson (Oro Valley, Ariz.) earned second team honors. Additionally, Moreno and Navratil were named to the All-Defensive Team.
Moreno has blossomed into a standout at the hot corner in his first season playing for the Huskies. He is the fourth Husky to earn All-NSIC honors at third base and the fifth to earn All-Defensive honors at the hot corner. His selection gives SCSU back-to-back first team honors at the hot corner, following Cal James in 2024 and three overall, joining Jordan Smith in 2011. At the plate, Moreno is hitting .363 with a 1.039 OPS, eight home runs, 32 RBI, 15 doubles, 56 runs and 19 stolen bases. He leads the team in batting average, hits, runs, doubles and stolen bases, and ranks among the NSIC's top-10 in each category as well. In the field, Moreno produced a .990 fielding percentage with 34 putouts and 69 assists while committing just one error on the season.
Navratil earns his first all-conference selection and his second selection to the All-Defensive team after earning the honor as a freshman in 2022. He's the fifth Husky first basemen to earn All-NSIC honors and the first since jake Shusterich earned second team honors in 2021. Navratil has had a banner season in his final collegiate campaign, as he enters the NSIC Tournament hitting .359 with a 1.043 OPS, 12 home runs, 58 RBI and 11 doubles. Among NSIC leaders, the Husky senior ranks fifth in RBI (58) and eighth in home runs (12). In the field, Navratil has made just one error this season with 361 put outs and 19 assists for a .997 fielding percentage. He is the fourth Husky to earn two NSIC All-Defensive honors and the third to earn the honor at first base, following Mat Meyer in 2019 and himself in 2022. Navratil has solidified his spot in the SCSU record book, as his 12 home runs and 58 RBI both rank 10th on the single season program top-10 list. Among career program records, he ranks fifth in home runs (31), fifth in RBI (163), sixth in games played (195) and ninth in extra-base hits (72).
Castro has produced in the middle of the Huskies lineup all season, hitting .331 with a .977 OPS, 10 home runs, 37 RBI and 13 doubles. Among team leaders, he ranks second in home runs and third in batting average, OPS, RBI and doubles.
Nelson has anchored the Huskies pitching staff in his first season with the black and red, producing a 7-1 mark with a 3.95 ERA, 45 strikeouts and a .265 opposing batting average in nine starts and 12 appearances. Among NSIC leaders, he ranks second in wins (seven), third in home runs allowed (four) and sixth in ERA (3.95). He's earned the victory in five of nine starts he's made on the mound with six starts lasting five or more innings.
