
St. Cloud State Athletics Mourns the Loss of Hall of Famer Greg Thayer

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Athletics is mourning the loss of Hall of Fame inductee Greg Thayer, who passed away on December 12 in Sauk Rapids. Thayer played baseball for the Huskies from 1969-71, football from 1968-70 and was inducted into the SCSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.
Thayer attended SCSU on a football scholarship, where he played quarterback and helped the Huskies win a conference championship in 1970. He also played three seasons on the baseball team, leading the Huskies to a conference championship in each of his three seasons on the diamond while earning all-conference honors in 1971 as a pitcher and outfielder.
After his junior season, Thayer signed a professional contract with the San Francisco Giants and played 10 years of professional baseball, reaching the major leagues in 1978 with the Minnesota Twins.
