Primerano scores with 10 seconds left to lift Huskies to victory
BISMARCK, N.D. – St. Cloud State Women's Soccer (3-0-2, 1-0-1 NSIC) appeared to be headed for its second draw in as many games when senior forward Ellie Primerano (Saint Joseph, Mich.) came up clutch, scoring with 10 seconds left on the clock to beat UMary (2-3-0, 0-2-0 NSIC), 1-0, on Sunday in Bismarck. The win pushes SCSU's unbeaten streak to a new program-high five games to start the season, surpassing its previous best start of 3-0-1 in 2002.
TURNING POINT
The game was an evenly matched contest for almost its entirety, with both teams registering 9+ shots and four corner kicks. UMary had a slight edge in shots on goal at 6-2, but redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Jaylee Strickland (Columbus, Ohio) was able to stop all six attempts from the Maurauders.
Not content with a draw, the Huskies continued to push despite the clock running down fast. SCSU had a throw in attempt near 30 yards out with 15 seconds remaining. Redshirt sophomore midfielder Kayla Allen (Holmen, Wis.) took the throw in and passed the ball to junior defender Grace Olson (West Des Moines, Iowa), who passed it up to Primerano standing just outside the box. Primerano was able to gather the pass, turn to the inside with the defender on her hip and take a shot with her right foot, beating the goalkeeper to the bottom left for the score with 10 seconds left on the clock.
TOP HUSKIES
SCSU will return home for its next two games, hosting Jamestown on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5:00 p.m. CT and Northern State on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 2:00 p.m. CT.
