SCSU beats UMary 72-60
Bismarck, N.D. – St. Cloud State Men's Basketball (11-5, 8-2 NSIC) picked up their fourth straight win as they defeated UMary 72-60 Saturday evening. Six Huskies scored 9+ points and defensively they held the Marauders to 31% shooting.
St. Cloud State produced a strong start in the first half with a 17-6 lead through the first eight minutes. The Huskies continued to extend their lead as an offensive putback by Wyatt Hawks pushed the lead to 15 points. Using a three-quarter court press, UMary was able to get back into the game by creating a frantic pace and forcing turnovers. The Huskies would go five minutes without a field goal as the Marauders cut the lead down to eight and then continued to battle to tie the game at 31 with 1:43 remaining in the half. SCSU would settle in before half as a 6-1 spurt gave them a 37-32 lead at the break.
UMary continued to hang around early into the second half as the Huskies looked to break the game open. After a relatively quiet scoring half, Luke Winkel got hot around the rim as he was continuously able to break the paint and finish inside. At the 14:29 mark of the second half, a downhill finish by Winkel sparked a 12-4 run where they grew their lead from six to 14 points in a three-minute span. SCSU was able to handle the pressure of UMary and then shutdown their offense in the second half as they only scored 28 points on 30.6% shooting. St. Cloud State led by 12+ points the rest of the way as they went on to win 72-60.
