Defense Shines in Huskies 71-57 Win over Minot State- January 9, 2026
Early on, the physicality and prowess of the Huskies defense was on full display as they held Minot State to one made field goal in the first seven minutes of play as they led 12-4. Bob Griechen had it going early as he scored 11 of the first 20 points for SCSU. With Griechen's spark off the bench, SCSU led 20-12 with 6:30 left in the half. St. Cloud State held firm on their lead as they went into the break with a 31-21 lead.
Out of halftime, the Huskies built their lead up to 15 points with a triple from Kynan Philippe and then a floater by Luke Winkel. St. Cloud State held a steady lead for most of the game and were aggressive getting to the basket and drawing fouls to slow the pace and halt any momentum the Beavers generated. SCSU got to the line 24 times in the second half and emphasized the free in free throw with 21 makes on those attempts. Minot State got as close as eight points on multiple occasions but never had the run to truly break through. The Huskies ultimately went on to 71-57 in their first game against an NSIC North opponent this season.

Using a three-quarter court press, UMary was able to get back into the game by creating a frantic pace and forcing turnovers. The Huskies would go five minutes without a field goal as the Marauders cut the lead down to eight and then continued to battle to tie the game at 31 with 1:43 remaining in the half. SCSU would settle in before half as a 6-1 spurt gave them a 37-32 lead at the break.
