Hall nets game-winner, Shostak makes 20 saves and records goalie assist on game-winner
OMAHA, Neb. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (11-11-0, 4-8-0 NCHC) improved to 8-3-0 on Saturday nights this season with a hard-fought, 2-1 win over Omaha (8-14-0, 4-8-0 NCHC) on Saturday at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb. Junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) netted the game-winning goal on the power play in the third period while freshman goaltender Yan Shostak (Minsk, Belarus) made 20 saves in net to earn the victory.
In first period where the Huskies outshot the Mavericks, 9-6, SCSU killed off two penalties to keep the game scoreless heading into the first intermission.
Omaha was able to break the deadlock just 4:24 into the second period when Samuel Huo scored on the power play to take a 1-0 lead. The Huskies didn't wait long to respond and tie the score, however, with senior forward Ethan AuCoin (Calgary, Alberta) scoring his first goal of the season just 2:49 later in the period. They Husky senior was able to draw a penalty on Omaha, which allowed the Huskies to add an extra attacker on the ice and move the puck around the offensive zone. Senior defenseman Mason Reiners (Edina, Minn.) took a shot from the point that got to AuCoin's stick in front of the net and then into the back of the net.
SCSU took the lead for good on the power play in the third period, scoring at the 7:04 mark of the final frame with Hall's sixth power play tally of the season. Omaha was able to poke check the puck away from SCSU at the blue line and appeared to have a breakaway shorthanded attempt the other way, but Shostak decided to come way out of crease to play the puck and pass it back up the ice. His pass bounced off the boards and right to the stick of junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) in a 2-on-1 rush, as he fed Hall alone in the slot for the game-winning score.
