SCSU outscores Beavers 25-13 in the fourth
Minot, N.D. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (5-9, 2-7 NSIC) snapped their three game losing streak Friday evening as they took down Minot State 80-71. A strong fourth quarter where they outscored the Beavers by 12 propelled them to victory.
Much of the first quarter was a back-and-forth affair. Each team had their runs to take control, but the other squad would respond. After a 7-0 run by the Beavers, the Huskies retook the lead with a 6-0 run of their own to lead 16-12. Powered by a trio of threes, Minot State ended the quarter on a 13-0 run to lead 25-16 after the first quarter. The Beavers held a steady lead for most of the second quarter, but SCSU returned the favor of a late quarter run as a 13-5 run in the final 3:23 of the half set the score at 43-40 with the Huskies trailing.
The third quarter saw the Beavers hold a small lead of a few points throughout, but a layup by Ashley Sawicki gave the Huskies a 53-51 lead, their first since the first quarter. The teams continued to battle as the Huskies ultimately went into the fourth trailing 58-55. Minot State burst out with a 4-0 run as they looked to take control now leading by seven. Jumpers by the Kottke twins weathered the storm to keep the deficit at bay. The jumpers ultimately sparked a 10-0 run as four straight points from Alana Zarneke again gave SCSU the lead with 5:26 remaining. The teams continued to trade buckets late in the game as they would be tied at 71 with 1:38 left in the game. On the Huskies ensuing possession following free throws by Minot State, Jada Eggebrecht fired a cross-court pass to Kristi Kottke in the slot who cashed a big three. St. Cloud State defense followed through with a steal as the Huskies called a timeout with 32 seconds left. Out of the timeout, Eggebrecht drove baseline out of the corner and delivered the dagger with a floater over three Beavers. Zarneke then came away with an inbounds steal in the frantic moment as MSU would have to foul. Eggebrecht was fouled twice in the final 24 seconds and connected on all four attempts. SCSU ended the game on a 9-0 run as they went on to beat Minot State 80-71.
