Burnevik scores twice, Gross becomes first Husky since 2022-23 to reach 40 points
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (16-16-1, 9-13-1 NCHC) won the shootout for an extra point in the conference standings in a 4-4 tie with No. 3 North Dakota (23-7-1, 15-5-1 NCHC) on Friday night at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. The Huskies scored three consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead after two periods before the Fighting Hawks scored two third period goals, including an extra attacker goal with 1:37 left to tie the game.
The two teams traded goals in the opening 20 minutes, with three goals coming in the final four minutes of the first period. UND struck first with a goal just 2:20 into the game, and the game remained 1-0 for more than 14 minutes of game time. Senior forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) was able to break through first for the Huskies, finishing a 2-on-1 breakaway all by himself for his second goal in as many games, tying the game at the 16:54 mark of the period. UND was then able to re-take the lead after a bad bounce found Will Zellers' stick in the slot for a goal. However, SCSU was able to tie the game again just 24 seconds later when junior forward Tyson Gross (Calgary, Alberta) won a puck battle behind the net and found sophomore forward Austin Burnevik (Ham Lake, Minn.) alone in the slot for a one-time score and goal.
The second period was all Huskies, with SCSU scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead. Burnevik and Gross teamed up for their second consecutive goal, with Gross winning a faceoff at the right dot in the offensive zone and moving the puck back to Burnevik, who fired a wrist shot towards the net for his 19th goal of the season. SCSU kept the pressure on, with Ingram and sophomore forward Daimon Gardner (Eagle Lake, Ontario) leading a rush into the offensive zone that resulted in a goal of Gardner's skate. Ingram pushed a backhanded centering pass to the net and the puck made its way through traffic, off a defender and then finally Gardner's skate before going into the back of the net.
North Dakota struck quick in the third period, scoring at the 1:45 mark of the period and then again with an extra attacker at 18:23 to tie the game. Neither team scored in overtime, resulting in a tie and shootout to decide the final point.
In the shootout, freshman goaltender Yan Shostak (Minsk, Belarus) made both saves he saw while junior forward Barrett Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Gross scored goals to seal the shootout win.
