ST. CLOUD, Minn. – (RV) St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (9-18-2, 5-16-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) got goals from five different skaters in its 5-1 series-opening victory over No. 15 Minnesota State on Friday Night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
SCSU opened the scoring when junior forward Alice Sauriol (Sherbrooke, Quebec) tossed the puck into the back of the net from just inside the blueline and doubled its lead just 22 seconds when redshirt sophomore forward Marie Moran (Lakeville, Minn.) had her centering pass from outside the right dot deflected into the back of the net off the stick of an MSU defender.
SCSU stretched its lead to 4-0 7:38 into the second period when freshman forward Julianne Labbé (Wendake, Quebec) forced a turnover in the offensive zone and delivered a backhand pass through the right circle to junior forward Sidney Jackel (Ann Arbor, Mich.) in front of the net. Jackel received the pass, spun around and scored a beautiful backhand goal.
The Huskies fifth and final goal of the game came under two minutes later, after they had multiple shots saved after a rush, but the MSU goaltender was unable to cover the puck and the person who started the rush, freshman forward Maria Mikaelyan (Moscow, Russia) was able to put the puck in the back of the net after it bounced to her feet on the doorstep.
