Huskies fall to Mavs 4-1 on Senior Day
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – (RV) St. Cloud State Women's Hockey (9-19-2, 5-17-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association) fell in its series finale against No. 15 Minnesota State on Saturday afternoon at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, 4-1. Following the game, the Huskies honored four seniors for a Senior Day cermony.
The Mavericks (13-15-2, 7-15-2 WCHA) got on the scoresheet first, netting the game's first goal 11:34 into the first period. MSU added its second and third goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead early in the second period, with the tallies coming just 15 seconds apart.
Midway through the third period, St. Cloud State ended the shutout bid when freshman defender Maélie Pion (Sherbrooke, Quebec) found the back of the net. Junior forward Payton Holloway (Tomah, Wis.) sent a pass from the goal line across the low slot that found Pion on the weakside. Pion took a shot and despite the Mankato netminder getting her glove on the puck, it trickled into the back of the net to cut the Huskies deficit to two with 9:48 left.
Minnesota State took a penalty with 4:52 left and SCSU pulled its goaltender 35 seconds later to try and take advantage of a 6-on-4 opportunity. The Huskies were able to get shots on net, but the Mavs killed off the penalty and eventually scored an empty net goal with just under 90 seconds remaining to ice the game at 4-1.
