St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Selected to Finish Eighth in NCHC Preseason Media Poll

A new era of Husky Hockey begins with head coach Nick Oliver hired in April
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey was selected to finish eighth in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Preseason Media Poll, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
The Huskies received 102 points overall in the media poll, ranking ahead of Arizona State (73) and Omaha (69). Coming off its third national championship in five years a season ago, Denver was selected to win the league with 304 points and 14 first-place votes. Ranking behind the Pioneers was North Dakota (302, 12 first-place votes), Minnesota Duluth (273, 7), Western Michigan (237), Miami (175), Colorado College (159) and St. Thomas (121).
A total of 33 ballots were submitted by local media members from each school, as well as select national media. Points were awarded on a descending scale with a first-place vote worth 10 points, a second-place vote worth nine points down to a 10th place-vote worth one point.
While the NCHC will not hold an in-person Media Day in 2026, media will be able to speak with coaches and student-athletes from each team via video call during the NCHC's virtual Media Days on Sept. 22-23. Commissioner Heather Weems' State of the Conference address will be posted to NCHC.tv following virtual Media Days.
SCSU Men's Hockey enters a new era with Oliver hired as the program's fourth head coach of the Division-I era in April. A former Husky captain and the only player/coach on roster for both NCAA Frozen Four berths in program history, Oliver welcomes a roster filled with returners, transfers and freshmen ready to take the ice at the newly renovated Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Included in the group of returners is the forward line of junior Gavyn Thoreson (Andover, Minn.), sophomore Nolan Roed (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and sophomore Noah Urness (Roseau, Minn.), who all scored 18+ points. The line was able to grow together throughout the season, with 39 percent of their production coming in SCSU's final 10 games.
