SCSU Rolls to 8-3 Victory over Alabama Huntsville
10/20/2012 12:22:00 AM | Men's Hockey
St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-2-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) scored its first victory of the 2012-13 season with an impressive 8-3 decision over Alabama Huntsville (0-2-1) at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud on Oct. 19.
This marked the first time since an 8-3 win over Alaska Anchorage at the NHEC that the Huskies have posted eight goals in a game.
SCSU controlled the game from the start as the Huskies charted their first goal of the contest at 7:06 of the first with a power play marker by junior Nic Dowd (Huntsville, Ala.) with assists from senior Drew LeBlanc (Hermantown) and junior Nick Jensen (Rogers). This was Dowd's first goal and it was appropriate he started the offense since he is a native of Huntsville.
Sophomore forward Brooks Bertsch (Dubuque, Iowa) added his first goal of the new season at 9:23 of the first period. LeBlanc and Jensen returned to the scoring column with assists on the play. The point was LeBlanc's 100th career point as a Husky. He becomes the 23rd Husky to join the SCSU 100-point club (DI level) and he now has 29 goals and 71 assists during his sterling career in the Granite City.
UAH broke the shutout at 6:34 of the second period with a power play goal by Alex Allan with an assist from Graeme Strukoff.
The Huskies ended the UAH rally at 7:03 of the second period with a goal by freshman defender Ethan Prow (Sauk Rapids). He was assisted on the play by freshman forward Jonny Brodzinski (Blaine) and freshman forward David Morley (Richmond Hills, Ont.). This was Prow's first collegiate goal and it was Brodzinski first point as a Husky.
Junior forward Cory Thorson (Crystal) made it 4-1 with a goal at 11:11 of the second period. Junior defender Kevin Gravel (Kingsford, Mich.) and sophomore forward Nick Oliver (Roseau) coined assists on the play for the Huskies. The assist was Oliver's first of the 2012-13 season and it was Thorson's first goal of the new year.
UAH added its second power play marker of the night with goal by Kyle Lysaght at 12:13 of the second period. The Huskies were quick to reply with another goal by Prow at 12:48 of the second as assists were added by Morley and Kallie Kossila (Finland), which was his first collegiate point at SCSU.
To complete the second period scoring, sophomore Joey Holka (Phoenix, Ariz.) made it 6-2 with a goal at 16:19. Dowd and Prow chalked up assists on the play. The goal was Holka's second of the 2012-13 season for SCSU.
In the third period, UAH notched its third and final power play goal of the game when Strukoff scored at 6:55 with helpers from Jack Prince and Allan. Sophomore blueliner Tim Daly (Maple Ridge, B.C.) scored for the Huskies at 13:19 of the third with assists from Thorson and Oliver to make it 7-3.

On the night, SCSU outhshot the Chargers 38-19. Freshman goalie Joseph Phillippi (Shoreview) earned the victory for the Huskies in his first collegiate start. Phillippi made 16 saves in the contest and all of the goals he allowed were on the UAH power play. John Griggs was the goalie of record for UAH with 22 saves in 40:00 minutes of play.
