Madison, Wis. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team battled hard but came up short in the LaBahn Arena Saturday as the Badgers prevailed 6-3 over the Huskies.
Wisconsin took an early 1-0 lead over the Huskies with a goal by Brianna Decker on a power-play advantage but the Huskies answered at the 14:19 mark of the first period to make it a 1-1 game. The goal was scored by freshman Vanessa Spataro making it her second of her career.
The Huskies came out determined and firing in the second period. SCSU controlled the period scoring early on a power-play advantage by Haylea Schmid. Assists were charted to senior Alex Nelson and sophomore Audrey Hanmer. Hanmer came back and scored unassisted 1:34 after the previous goal taking the Huskies to a 3-1 lead over the Badgers.
St. Cloud State got into some trouble on penalties putting the Badgers on a power-play at the 12:41 mark of the second period. Wisconsin scored making it a 3-2 game going into the second intermission.
Wisconsin came out and tied the game up at the 2:41 mark of the third and then the Huskies could not recover as the Badgers scored three more goals taking a 6-3 lead. The Badgers last goal was shot from the opposite side of the ice and into an empty net of the Huskies.
With a strong second period the Huskies could not hold on to the momentum they built after multiple penalties that helped the Badgers. Wisconsin outshot the Huskies by a margin of 44 to 29.
Freshman Katie Fitzgerald recorded 38 saves while the Badgers' Alex Rigsby totaled 26 on the game. SCSU finished one-for-eight on power-play advantages and the Badgers went two-for-eight.
St. Cloud State (4-11-1, 2-10-0 WCHA) will return to action Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 as they travel to Lindenwood University for their second non-conference meeting between each other. Games are slated to start at 7 p.m. and 2 p.m.
