Denver, Colo. - The #18 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (5-2-0, 3-0-0 WCHA) pushed its winning streak to five games with a big 3-0 shutout at #3 ranked Denver (4-1-0, 2-1-0 WCHA).
The Huskies jumped to a 2-0 first period lead and held on to earn SCSU's second shutout of the young 2012-13 season. This was also the Huskies' first shutout against Denver since a 6-0 victory over the Pioneers in Denver on Dec. 3, 1999 with Scott Meyer in the nets.
The game winner for SCSU was posted at 12:09 of the first period with a power play marker by junior Nic Dowd (Huntsville, Ala.). Junior defense Nick Jensen (Rogers) and sophomore defender Andrew Prochno (Minnetonka) each had assists on the play. Dowd now has charted goals in the Huskies' last five games and has scored in all seven games played this season.
The Huskies padded their lead to 2-0 with an even-strength goal by freshman Kalle Kossila (Finland) at 15:21 of the first period. Assists were charted on the play by Jensen and senior forward Drew LeBlanc (Hermantown). The goal was Kossila's fourth of the season while Jensen and LeBlanc both lead the Huskies this winter with eight assists apiece.
The two squads battled to a scoreless tie in the second period before the Huskies capped the evening with a third period goal by Dowd at 11:39. Sophomore forward Joey Holka (Arizona) and junior forward Kevin Gravel (Kingsford, Mich.) each added assists on the play for SCSU. The goal allowed Dowd to move into the team's scoring lead this season with six goals and six assists for 12 points. Dowd currently ranks second among DI players with 12 points this season.
SCSU sophomore netminder Ryan Faragher (Fort Frances, Ont.) was stellar in the nets with 28 saves to his credit. This was Faragher's second shutout of 2012-13 and his third career shutout at SCSU. Sam Brittain was the goalie of record for the Pioneers with 23 saves.
In the game, DU outshot the Huskies 28-26. On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-4 and Denver was 0-of-2 in the game. SCSU has now gone for four consecutive games without allowing a power play goal.
