Jensen, Brodzinski score in WCHA victory for SCSU
St. Cloud, MInn. - The #17 St. Cloud State University Huskies (9-7-0, 7-5-0 WCHA) ended a two-game losing skid with a big 2-1 victory over #14 Nebraska Omaha (10-5-1, 6-3-1 WCHA) on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the National Hockey and Event Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
Unlike the offensive showcase at the NHEC on Friday night (Dec. 7), the Huskies relied on solid defense and timely offense to gain the one-goal victory over UNO. Tied at 1-1, SCSU freshman forward Jonny Brodzinski clinched it with his first collegiate game winner at 10:45 of the third period. Forwards Ben Hanowski and Nic Dowd added assists on the play for the Huskies.
The goal was Brodzinski's fifth of the season, while it marked the seventh assist of the year for Hanowski and the 12th assist of the year for Dowd.
The Huskies went on to claim the win with sharp netminding by sophomore Ryan Faragher, who withstood the final minute of play with UNO skating with the extra attacker. In game, Faragher netted 23 saves and improved to 8-6-0 on the season.
SCSU scored the all-important first goal in the contest when defender Nick Jensen scored at 10:00 of the first period with a solo assist from Drew LeBlanc.
This was Jensen's first goal of the 2012-13 season and it marked LeBlanc's team-leading 16th assist of the year. LeBlanc has now scored in five consecutive games for the Huskies.
Of note, SCSU is 6-0-0 this season when it scores the first goal of a game.
In the closing minute of the first period, UNO knotted the score at 1-1 with a marker by Matt White at 19:21. The lone assist on the play was posted by Andrej Sustr.
Things got interesting in the third period as the referees waved off two UNO goals after review. The first goal waved off was due to a player in the crease and the second goal was waved off on a kicked puck call. Brodzinski then stepped into the spotlight with his GWG to ice the win.
In the game, SCSU outshot the Mavericks 28-24 as Anthony Stolarz was the goalie of record for UNO with 26 saves. On the power play, SCSU was 0-3 and UNO was 0-1 in the contest.
The Huskies will resume their long homestand with a pair of games on Dec. 14-15 against WCHA rival Colorado College. Great tickets are available for these games and complete ticket information is available at www.scsutickets.com or by calling 1-877-SCSUTIX.
