#15/16 SCSU Men's Hockey Brings Back Three Points From #5 UND

Grand Forks, N.D. - The #15/16 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (15-10-1, 12-5-1 WCHA) ended its weekend in Grand Forks, N.D. with a 2-2 overtime decision at #5 North Dakota (13-8-5, 8-5-5 WCHA) on Saturday, Jan. 26.
This marked the first tie of the season for the Huskies and it also provided SCSU with a crucial three-point weekend in WCHA play. The Huskies stayed in first place in the WCHA with 25 points, while Minnesota and Nebraska Omaha are tied for second with 24 points. North Dakota fell into a tie for fourth place with Minnesota State and Wisconsin with 21 points.
SCSU senior Ben Hanowski also completed a three point weekend as he posted both of SCSU's goals in the tie. He opened the Husky attack with a power play goal at 3:08 of the first period that gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead. David Morley and Kalle Kossila each had assists on the play
UND tied the game at 5:02 of the first period with a shorthanded goal by Danny Kristo. UND took a 2-1 lead later in the first with a goal at 15:45 by Corbin Knight.
The Huskies knotted the score at 2-2 in the second period with Hanowski's second goal of the game at 1:59. A delayed UND penalty allowed the Huskies to put the extra attacker on ice, which provided the advantage needed for the score.
SCSU postseason honors candidate Drew LeBlanc added his DI leading 28th assist on the goal. SCSU rookie Jonny Brodzinski notched the second assist on Hanowski's game tying goal This was Hanowski's 11th goal of the season and it was Brodzinski's ninth assist of the year. Brodzinski also pushed his current point streak to 11 games with the point.
Of note, Hanowski, Dowd, Kossila and Brodzinski all lead the Huskies this season with 11 goals apiece.
In the game, SCSU was outshot 36-18 and the Huskies were 1-of-4 on the power play. UND was 0-of-3 on the advantage in the game. In the nets, Ryan Faragher made 34 saves in the contest and collected three big OT saves. Clarke Saunders made 16 saves in the game for UND.
The Huskies will continue their 2012-13 season on Feb. 1-2 with a pair of games at Bemidji State University. Fans can listen to both games on KNSI Radio and KVSC Radio. The games are also scheduled to be televised on Lakeland Public Television.
