Women's Hockey Falls Friday to #1 Minnesota, 4-1

St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State women's hockey played host to #1 Minnesota Friday night starting their two-game series at home in the comforts of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Minnesota prevailed for a 4-1 final score over the Huskies.
Minnesota was the first on the board taking a 1-0 lead at the 5:43 mark of the first period as Sarah Davis put the puck into the low left side of the net past the Huskies' goalie.
The Huskies would hold the Gophers to a 1-0 lead until over halfway through the second period but Minnesota would come back to put up two back-to-back goals. Kelsey Cline and Rachael Bona recorded the goals just 34 seconds within each other for the Gophers 3-0 lead.
Just 1:07 into the third period St. Cloud would make a break for it to have the freshman showing up big as Payge Pena shot from right in front of the net making it a 3-1 game. Freshman teammates Kelsey Saelens and Lauren Hespenheide recorded the assists on the goal for their firsts as well.
St. Cloud was unable to come back as Minnesota sealed a 4-1 victory at the 3:51 mark of the third on an even goal by Kelly Terry.
In Goal for the Huskies was junior Julie Friend putting up 41 saves, while the Gophers' Amanda Leveille totaled 19 for the win. Friend moves her record to 1-5-2 on the season. St. Cloud finished the game going 0-1 on the power-play and Minnesota ended going 0-2.
St. Cloud State (1-7-3, 1-6-2-1 WCHA) and #1 Minnesota (11-0-0, 9-0-0 WCHA) will be back for the final game of the series on Saturday, Nov. 9 with the puck drop set for 3:07 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
