Late Goal Spoils Huskies' Upset Bid, 4-3

St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State University women's hockey rounded out their home series against #1 Minnesota Saturday afternoon in Brooks Center as a late goal ended the Huskies upset over the Gophers. Minnesota went on to win 4-3 over St. Cloud.
Coming off a 4-1 loss on Friday night the Huskies were determined to make something happen. A scoreless game would go until the 7:39 mark of the first period as junior Abby Ness found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Michelle Burke and Julia Gilbert were credited with the assists.
The Huskies extended their lead 2-0 over the unbeaten Gophers at the 13:10 mark of the first on an even strength goal by Molli Mott, shooting just right of the goal. Assisting on the goal was Julia Gilbert for her second of the game.
This was the first time Minnesota had faced a two-goal deficit in 71 games as the Huskies led going into the first intermission.
Minnesota came out in the second period scoring at the 3:56 mark on a power-play goal by Sarah Davis to cut St. Cloud's lead to 2-1. Davis would then come back to tie the game up 2-2 just minutes later, making it a game going into the second intermission.
St. Cloud never lost their momentum as they came out in the third period to regain a 3-2 lead over the Gophers just 49 seconds into the period. It was freshman Lauren Hespenheide recording her first collegiate goal with assist going to freshman Kelsey Saelens.
The Gophers would come back to score two goals in the last minutes of the game to end the Huskies upset, 4-3. St. Cloud ended the game going 0-5 on the power-play, while Minnesota finished 1-3.
In goal for St. Cloud Saturday was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald as she recorded 32 saves, while the Gophers' Amanda Leveille tallied 17. Fitzgerald moves her record to 0-3-1 on the season.
St. Cloud State (1-8-3, 1-7-2-1 WCHA) will be back in action on Nov. 15-16 as they travel to Vail, Colo. for the Vail Tournament. The Huskies will take on Boston University Friday and Northeastern University Saturday. Game times are set for 5:07 p.m. CT and 3:07 p.m. CT respectively.
