Women's Hockey Heads to the Rockies on Nov. 15-16

St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State is setting out to Vail, Colorado for the Vail Tournament where they will take on #8 Boston University and Northeastern University for a non-conference series Nov. 15-16. Game times are set for 5:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. CT respectively from the Dobson Ice Arena.

THE RECORD: The Huskies comes into this weekend's non-conference play holding a 1-8-3 overall record and a 1-7-2-1 record in the WCHA, which is good for sixth place in the conference.

LAST TIME OUT: St. Cloud State women's hockey team was back at home for one series as they played host to #1 Minnesota Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9. Minnesota prevailed on Friday for a 4-1 final score over the Huskies. A late goal Saturday ended the Huskies upset over the Gophers as Minnesota went on to win 4-3 over St. Cloud. Friday, Minnesota would hold a 3-0 lead over the Huskies after two periods of play but St. Cloud made it a 3-1 game just 1:07 into the third period. It was the freshmen showing up big as Payge Pena shot from right in front of the net for her first collegiate goal and was assisted by Kelsey Saelens and Lauren Hespenheide for their firsts as well. In Goal for the Huskies was junior Julie Friend putting up 41 saves. Friend moves her record to 1-5-2 on the season. Saturday was one for the record books for the Huskies. Junior Abby Ness found the back of the net to put St. Cloud on the board for a 1-0 lead over Minnesota at the 7:39 mark of the first. Michelle Burke and Julia Gilbert were credited with the assists. The Huskies extended their lead 2-0 over the unbeaten Gophers at the 13:10 mark of the first on an even strength goal by Molli Mott, shooting just right of the goal. Assisting on the goal was Julia Gilbert for her second of the game. This was the first time Minnesota had faced a two-goal deficit in 71 games as the Huskies led going into the first intermission. This was also the first time since Feb. 13, 2010 that the Huskies have held a 2-0 lead over the Gophers after one period. Back-to-back goals in the second by Minnesota made it a 2-2 game going into the second intermission. St. Cloud never lost their momentum as they came out in the third period to regain a 3-2 lead over the Gophers just 49 seconds into the period. It was freshman Lauren Hespenheide recording her first collegiate goal with an assist by freshman Kelsey Saelens. The Huskies held onto the lead until the last two minutes of the game when a couple late goals ended the upset. St. Cloud held the Gophers from taking a lead in the game for 58:51 minutes of play. In goal for St. Cloud Saturday was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald as she recorded 32 saves.

PREVIOUS MEETINGS: The Huskies have only played Boston and Northeastern a couple times in past seasons. The latest meeting against BU came Nov. 16-17, 2007 in Boston where the Huskies swept the Terriers 5-0 and 3-1. SCSU and BU have only met one other time for a two-game series in St. Cloud during the 2006-07 season. St. Cloud and Northeastern on the other hand have only met once which came on Jan. 2, 2011 at the Easton Holiday Showcase held by SCSU. NU defeated St. Cloud 2-1 in the match-up.

FRESHMEN SHOWING: St. Cloud's freshmen showed up big for the Huskies this past weekend against Minnesota as they put up two goals and three assists in the series. Payge Pena scored her first collegiate goal in game one for the Huskies sole goal of the game at the 1:07 mark of the third period. Lauren Hespenheide also recorded her first goal in game two of the series. Kelsey Saelens was charted with assists on both goals and Hespenheide assisted Pena in game one.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Lauren Hespenheide was named WCHA Rookie of the Week for Nov. 13 based on her performance against #1 Minnesota last weekend recording one assist and one goal on the weekend. Hespenheide's goal came just :49 seconds into the third period of game two giving the Huskies to a 3-2 lead over the Gophers.
