SCSU Women's Hockey Set to Host #1 Minnesota

St. Cloud, Minn. - The St. Cloud State women's hockey team is set to kick off their home series Friday and Saturday, Nov. 8-9 as they host #1 Minnesota. Puck drop is set for 3:07 p.m. both days from the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.Â
THE RECORD: The Huskies comes into this weekend's series against Minnesota holding a 1-6-3 overall record and a 1-5-2-1 record in the ever-grueling WCHA, good for sixth place in the standings.
LAST TIME OUT: The Huskies skated to their first victory of the 2013-14 season with a 4-1 win over host Minnesota Duluth last Friday (Nov. 1) at AMSOIL Arena and came out with the 1-1 overtime tie last Saturday (Nov. 2). In the series opener at UMD, senior Julia Gilbert, playing in her hometown area, put the Huskies ahead at the 1:27 mark of the second period. Assists went to senior Molli Mott and sophomore Skye Kelly. The Huskies scored three more goals in the second period to lead the Bulldogs 4-0. St. Cloud's second goal came on a power-play opportunity as senior captain Amy Olson collected her first collegiate goal at the 9:30 mark. The Huskies made it a 3-0 game at 13:42 as Mott fired a shot from between the face-off circles. Olson quickly got her second goal at the 16:27 mark of the second period to cap a four-goal burst. Duluth made it a 4-1 game early in the third but St. Cloud held on to earn their first victory over UMD in 13 match-ups. Junior goaltender Julie Friend recorded 52 saves for the win and improved her record to 1-4-2. Last Saturday at UMD, the host Bulldogs were first to score early in the second period for a 1-0 lead. SCSU didn't even the score until pulling the goalie for an extra attacker. Gilbert brought the Huskies back, tying the game 1-1 from right in front of the net with 22 seconds left in regulation. Mott and Olson were credited with the assists. After a scoreless overtime, Minnesota Duluth won the shootout, 2-0. Goalie Katie Fitzgerald recorded 39 saves and saw her record move to 0-2-1 on the season.

Ranked: Minnesota is currently ranked #1 in the WCHA standings just above Wisconsin. In National polls Minnesota has been ranked #1 for seven straight weeks in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and the USCHO.com poll.
Leaders: Leading the Gophers is sophomore Hanna Brandt with a total of 16 points (4g, 12a) on the season. She is closely followed by freshmen Kelly Terry (7g, 8a) and Rachael Bona (6g, 9a) as they both have 15 points. In the net for the Gophers is sophomore Amanda Leveille holding a 10-0-0 record with a .951 save percentage, 1.20 GAA, and has only let in 12 goals.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS: The Huskies and the Gophers met twice last season in conference play as SCSU started the season and ended the season against Minnesota. The first meeting came on Oct. 5-6, 2012 in Minneapolis where SCSU fell 7-1 and 4-0. The final meeting was on Feb. 22-23, 2013 in St. Cloud with the Gophers prevailing 2-0 and 3-0.
LOOKING TO BUILD MOMENTUM: St. Cloud is looking to be the one to end the Gophers 59 game win streak this weekend, as they have not been able to defeat the Gophers since Feb. 13, 2010. With the Huskies coming off a great weekend in Duluth they are hoping to continue their momentum into this weekend to fight for that first victory at home.
CAREER FIRSTS: Senior captain Amy Olson put up her first collegiate goals against Minnesota Duluth this past weekend. Olson scored the game-winning goal on Friday (Nov.1) on St. Cloud's power-play and then helped seal the win with her second goal at the 16:27 mark of the second for a 4-0 lead.
FRIEND DOMINATED: Junior goalie Julie Friend was named WCHA Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 6 for her outstanding performance between the pipes in the Huskies 4-1 victory over #9 Minnesota Duluth last weekend. Friend posted 52 of 53 saves in the game, earning her first victory of the season as well as the teams.
FOUR-GOAL PERIOD: St. Cloud scored four goals in the second period of Friday's 4-1 victory over Minnesota Duluth, making it the highest scoring output by the Huskies in a single period since scoring four goals in the second period against Lindenwood last season on Nov. 10, 2012.
LEADING THE HUSKIES: Senior forward Molli Mott leads the Huskies with three goals and six assist for a total nine points on 16 shots. Mott has played in all 10 games so far for St. Cloud, has recorded 12 defensive blocks, and has a zero plus/minus on the season.
