Kirksville, Mo. - The St. Cloud State University baseball team took to the road Sunday taking on Truman State University in a regional doubleheader. The Huskies split with the Bulldogs prevailing in game one 2-1 and fell in game two 7-5.
In game one, scoring did not come until the top of the fourth inning when the Huskies' Brian Hansen hit a double to right field for 2 RBIs scoring Sean Borman and Michael Jurgella. Borman was on second after a double and Jurgella had walked prior with two outs on the board.
Truman State came back in the bottom of the fifth scoring one run off a wild pitch by SCSU's Kyle Fischer making it a 2-1 game.
On the mound for the Huskies' was Kyle Fischer pitching 6.2 innings and facing 28 at bats before being relieved by Reese Gregory who faced one batter in the seventh inning. With the win Fischer moves his record to 7-1 and Gregory earns his eighth save on the season.
In game two, the Huskies came up short ending a 15 game win streak. SCSU batted in a run right away in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Phil Imholte led off for the Huskies getting hit by a pitch and then Garret Fischer singled out to right field. Fischer then advanced to second on a wild pitch while Imholte stood on third. Borman grounded out to third base to score Imholte for the sole run in the first.
The Bulldogs came out swinging scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. They continued to score three runs in the second and one in the sixth, while the Huskies scored one run in the second and three in the third.
SCSU's Nick Maiers was the starting pitcher for the Huskies pitching 1.1 innings and recording the loss and then was relieved by Corey Fitzgerald who pitched 6.2 innings.
"We played some tough games Sunday with 20-30 mph winds and Maiers not able to throw strikes like he is used to hurt us in game two, but it is good to be playing," said head coach Pat Dolan.
"We have to turn our attention to tomorrow's game now as Missouri Western is another tough team in our region."
St. Cloud State (22-3, 10-0 NSIC) will return to action Monday as they take on Missouri Western State University in a single nine inning regional game. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m. at the Griffon Baseball Field at the Spring Sports Complex in St. Joseph, Mo.
