The St. Cloud State University baseball team (37-11) saw its 2013 season come to a conclusion with a 17-1 loss to Minnesota State University (39-8) in the championship game of the NCAA Division II Central Region tournament on Sunday, May 19 at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato.

The Mavericks gained control of the game early with two runs in the first inning and one run in the second before the Huskies' Brian Hansen scored in the fourth inning on an RBI by Mike Jurgella.

MSU padded its lead with runs in the fifth and sixth innings before the flood gates opened with an 11-run seventh inning that pushed MSU's lead to 16-1.

Ryan Diers opened the game for the Huskies with 4.0 innings of work, three hits allowed and four runs allowed. Logan Spitzack, Nick Maiers, Garrett Anderson and Garrett Harrison made relief pitching appearances for the Huskies to complete the game.

In the contest, MSU outhit the Huskies 18-6 Hansen led the Huskies with two hits while Phil Imholte and Garrett Fischer each had doubles in the game for SCSU.

The Huskies completed the regional tournament with a 3-2 record and finished as the tournament runner-up for the second consecutive season. Of note, SCSU has been the Regional runner-up three times in the last four seasons.

In addition to earning their fourth consecutive NCAA tournament bid, SCSU won the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference regular season championship and the Huskies were the top seed at the 2013 NSIC tournament.

SCSU first baseman Garrett Fischer and outfielder Eric Loxtercamp were both named to the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region All-Tournament team for their play in Mankato this week.

With the tournament victory, MSU will advance to the 2013 NCAA Division II baseball championships in Cary, N.C. next week.
