#5 St. Cloud State Falls 4-1 at North Star College Cup

St. Paul, Minn. – In its North Star College Cup debut, the #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team suffered a 4-1 loss to #1 University of Minnesota (18-2-3, 7-0-1 Big Ten) on Friday, Jan. 24 before 14,388 fans at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The loss moves SCSU's record to 12-5-4, 7-3-2 NCHC.
Minnesota opened the game's scoring at 8:58 of the first period with a power play goal by Travis Boyd as the solo assist was added by Hudson Fasching.
The Huskies charged back into the action in the second period with an even-strength goal by sophomore Jonny Brodzinski at 11:22 of the second period. He was assisted on the play by senior Kalle Kossila.
This was Kossila's 11th assist of the season and Brodzinski's team leading 12th goal of the year. He also leads the Huskies this year with 22 points on offense. Of note, Brodzinski has charted a point in the Huskies last six consecutive games.
Minnesota broke the tie at 14:24 of the second period with a goal by Nate Condon with assists from Mike Reilly and Sam Warning. The Gophers pushed their lead to 3-1 at 18:14 of the second period with a power play marker by Fasching. Assists on the goal were provided by Boyd and Reilly.
SCSU managed to outshoot the Gophers 13-10 in the final period but the Huskies were unable to solve UM netminder Adam Wilcox, who turned aside 38 shots in the game. Minnesota then capped the night with an empty net goal at 19:31 of the third by Seth Ambroz.
On the night, SCSU outshot the Gophers 39-29 as starting Husky netminder Ryan Faragher made 16 saves and allowed three goals in 40:00 of play. Charlie Lindgren played the final period for SCSU with nine saves to his credit.
On the power play, SCSU was 0-2 and Minnesota was 2-2 in the contest.
The Huskies will continue play at the North Star College Cup on Saturday, Jan. 25 with a 4:07 p.m. game against Minnesota State Mankato in the consolation game. The championship game at 7:07 p.m. will feature Minnesota and Minnesota Duluth.
