#5 St. Cloud State Gains 6-4 Win at North Star College Cup

St. Paul, Minn. - The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (13-5-4, 7-3-2-0 NCHC) completed its run at the North Star College Cup with a 6-4 victory over Minnesota State Manakto (14-12-0, 12-6-0 WCHA) in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul, Minn.
The Huskies relied on a four-goal breakout in the second period to bring home the victory, which snapped a four-game winless streak for St. Cloud State.
The Mavericks gained an early lead in the game at 9:39 of the first period with a goal by J.P. Lafontaine. SCSU replied with an even strength goal at 16:08 of the first period by sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski. The solo assist on his goal was added by freshman forward Ryan Papa.
MSU regained a 2-1 lead at 2:11 of the second period with an even-strength goal by Bryce Gervais. The Huskies responded in top order by charting four unanswered goals before the end of the second period.
Cory Thorson opened the barrage with his seventh goal of the season at 8:49 of the second period. He was assisted on the effort by Kevin Gravel and Nic Dowd.
Dowd continued the run with an even-strength goal at 11:11 of the second period. The goal was Dowd's 12th of the season and it was assisted by David Morley and Ethan Prow. Morley now leads the club this year with 15 assists while Prow has nine helpers in 2013-14.
Brodzinski added his second goal of the afternoon with a power play marker at 15:01 of the second. Dowd and Andrew Prochno posted assists on the play. On the season, Dowd now has 10 assists and 22 points after his three-point performance against the Mavs.
Morley finished the period with another power play goal at 15:54, which proved to be the game winner that made it 5-2. Prochno and Gravel each had assists on the play for the Huskies. Gravel now has 11 assists and 13 points this season, while Prochno leads the SCSU blueliners with 12 assists in 2013-14.
Minnesota State Mankato made it 5-3 with a power play goal by Johnny McInnis at 5:37 of the third period. The Huskies then iced the contest at 7:54 of the third period with a power play goal by Kalle Kossila on assists from Brodzinski and Prow. MSU finished the game's scoring at 9:07 of the final period with another goal by Lafontaine.
Brodzinski finished the game with two goals and one assist to boost his team leading totals to 14 goals and 25 points. On the power play, SCSU was 3-of-4 and MSU was 1-of-3 in the game. In the shots on goal category, MSU dominated the game 41-25.
SCSU's goalie of record in the contest was Ryan Faragher who charted 37 saves on the way to his 12th win of the season. Stephon Williams had 10 saves in the start for MSU and allowed five goals in 35:54 minutes of play. Cole Huggins completed the game for MSU with one goal allowed and nine saves.
