Burke Scores First Goal of the Season in 3-1 Loss at Minnesota

Minneapolis, Minn. -Â The St. Cloud State women's hockey team was back in Ridder Arena, Saturday taking on Minnesota for the final game of their WCHA series. Minnesota earned the series sweep as they defeated the Huskies, 3-1.
Action got going right away in the first period as Minnesota took a 1-0 lead just :32 seconds into the game. Scoring for the Gophers was junior Rachel Bona.
St. Cloud shook off the early goal and came back to hold the Gophers with goalie Katie Fitzgerald making huge saves in the net keeping the Huskies in the game.
In the second period, Minnesota extended their lead 2-0 at the 6:44 mark on a goal by junior Meghan Lorence. The Huskies would come back though to get on the board scoring at the 12:50 mark of the period. Senior Michelle Burke was credited with the goal in the crease for her first of the season. Burke was assisted on the goal by freshman Lauren Hespenheide.
With just less than two minutes to play in the second period, the Gophers made it a 3-1 game as Milica McMillen fired a shot off just after their power-play ended for the even-strength goal.
No scoring in the third period took the Gophers to a sweep over the Huskies with a 3-1 victory.
Earning the start and goalie of record for the Huskies was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald recording an impressive 44 saves, while the Gophers' Amanda Leveille tallied 17. Fitzgerald sees her record move to 1-8-1 on the season.Â
St. Cloud State (4-21-3, 3-17-2-1 WCHA) will be back in action Jan. 31-Feb.1 in the comforts of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center as they host the Ohio State University Buckeyes. Game times are set for 7:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. respectively.
St. Cloud State Athletics is sponsoring a National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Halenbeck Hall prior to the SCSU women's hockey game. This event is free to all girls and boys, age 14 and under. It will be held in the Halenbeck Hall North Balcony from 2:15 to 3:45. Young people will participate in a fitness circuit supporting healthy lifestyles and physical activity at stations sponsored by Huskies Athletics, St. Cloud State Campus Rec, and CentraCare Blend.
