St. Cloud, Minn. -Â The St. Cloud State women's hockey team was back in the comforts of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Friday night as they hosted the Ohio State University Buckeyes. St. Cloud dropped game one to the Buckeyes by a final score of 4-1.Â
With the Huskies coming off a six-game road stint they were looking for a win at home to bring them out of a slump. Ohio State started the period by taking a 1-0 lead over St. Cloud at the 3:51 mark, scoring on a power-play opportunity. Taylor Kuehl recorded the goal off assists from Breanne Grant and Kari Schmitt.Â
St. Cloud came back though at the 16:28 mark as senior Molli Mott stuck one in the back of the net for a 1-1 game. Assisting Mott on the goal was freshman Alexandra Makaric and senior Julia Gilbert. The first period ended with the teams tied at one each and Ohio State leading shots on goal by a margin of 10-to-3.
Coming out in the second period it was all Ohio State as they regained the lead 2-1 at the 6:26 mark. The Buckeyes continued to extend their lead scoring at the 15:20 mark and 16:51 mark of the period to make it a 4-1 game into intermission.
The Huskies played well in the third to outshoot the Buckeyes 15-8 but could not get any shots past their goalie as they fell by a final score of 4-1. The Buckeyes outshot St. Cloud 31-to-24 and went one-for-two on the power-play, while SCSU went zero-for-one.Â
Starting in goal for St. Cloud and goalie of record was junior Julie Friend recording 27 saves, while Ohio State's Lisa Steffes put up 23 for the win. Friend moves her record to 3-14-2 on the season.
St. Cloud State (4-22-3, 3-18-2-1 WCHA) and Ohio State (10-12-5, 5-11-5-2 WCHA) will be back at it again Saturday afternoon for the final game of their series. The puck drop is set for 3:07 p.m. from Brooks Center.Â
