St. Cloud, Minn. -Â St. Cloud State women's hockey ended their second to last regular season series at home Saturday against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Huskies early goal was not enough to hold off the Buckeyes as they earned the sweep with a 6-1 victory.
The first period of the game was strong in defense as shots on goal were low. It was not until the 19:29 mark of the period when freshman Payge Pena laid out to put the puck in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead over Ohio State. Assisting Pena on the goal was freshman Lauren Hespenheide and senior Michelle Burke.Â
St. Cloud ended the first period outshooting the Buckeyes nine-to-seven.Â
Coming out in the second period, Ohio State tied the game up 1-1 as Melani Moylan scored just :35 seconds into the period. The Buckeyes then gained control of the game scoring three more goals in the second for a 4-1 lead. Out of OSU's four goals in the period, two were power-play opportunities.Â
The Buckeyes continued to play strong in third putting up two more power-play goals even though St. Cloud outshot them by a margin of 11-to-7. Ohio State ended regulation defeating the Huskies for the series sweep, 6-1.Â
Ending the game, shots on goal were almost even with Ohio State outshooting St. Cloud, 26-to-25. Leading the Huskies in shots on goal was senior assistant captain Cari Coen with five shots.Â
Playing between the pipes for St. Cloud Saturday was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald recording 20 saves, while OSU's Lisa Steffes tallied 24 for the win. Fitzgerald now sees her record move to 1-9-1 on the season.Â
St. Cloud State (4-23-3, 3-19-2-1 WCHA) will now take to the road for a WCHA series against rival Minnesota State, Feb. 7-8. Game times are set for 7:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. respectively from All Seasons Arena in Mankato.
