Hespenheide Posts Two Goals in Huskies 4-2 Loss to Mankato

Mankato, Minn. – St. Cloud State women's hockey kicked off their final regular season road series Friday night as they took on WCHA rival Minnesota State. A late comeback by Mankato in the third earned the Mavericks a 4-2 victory over St. Cloud.
With both teams sitting tied for seventh place in the conference standings the series was up for grabs. It was a scoreless game until the 14:08 mark of the first period when freshman Lauren Hespenheide fired a shot into the back of the net after getting her own rebound for a 1-0 lead. It was an all freshmen goal with Payge Pena and Christa Moody earning the assists.
St. Cloud ended the first period outshooting the Mavericks by a margin of 16-to-7.
Goalies for each team were dominant in the second period making huge saves to keep it a 1-0 game in favor of the Huskies. With only :13 seconds left in the period, Hespenheide would get her second goal of the night making it a 2-0 game going into the second intermission. Charting the assists on the goal were Pena and senior Molli Mott.
The third period was all Minnesota State as they tied the game up 2-2 at the 12:10 mark of the third period as Tracy McCann scored from right in front of the net. Kathleen Rogan would make it a 3-2 game at the 16:40 mark of the third and then with less than a minute left an empty-net goal would seal a 4-2 victory for the Mavericks.
Starting between the pipes and goalie of record for St. Cloud was junior Julie Friend posting 33 saves, while MSU's Erin Krichiver tallied 29 saves. Friend sees her record move to 4-14-2 on the season. Minnesota State ended the game outshooting the Huskies by a final margin of 37-to-31.
St. Cloud State (4-24-3, 3-20-2 WCHA) and Minnesota State (10-19-0, 5-18-0 WCHA) will be back for their final game of the series Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for a 3:07 p.m. start from the All Seasons Arena.
