Mankato, Minn. – St. Cloud State women's hockey ended their final regular season road series Saturday afternoon as they were back at it against rival Minnesota State. The Huskies and Mavericks tied in overtime 3-3 with St. Cloud winning in the shootout 1-0.
The first period of the game started out just like game one on Friday as it was scoreless until the 15:12 mark with a goal by MSU's Kelsie Scott for a 1-0 lead. Minnesota State held on to the 1-0 lead into the first intermission and outshot St. Cloud 16-to-5 in the first.
Coming out in the second period the Huskies were skating with some tenacity and made it a 1-1 game at the 8:19 mark of the period. St. Cloud was on a power-play opportunity as senior Cari Coen wound up from just at the top of the left face-off circle with junior Audrey Hanmer down in front of the net to direct the puck in for the score. Assists were charted to Coen and senior Michelle Burke.
Later in the second, the Mavericks regained the lead on a power-play goal by Kari Lundberg at the 15:34 mark for a 2-1 game. St. Cloud outshot the Mavericks in the second period by a margin of 17-to-9.
Trailing by one coming out in the third period the Huskies were still in the game. Senior Molli Mott found the back of the net at the 4:13 mark making it a 2-2 game. Seniors Julia Gilbert and Burke were credited with the assists.
The Mavericks came back to regain the lead at the 12:53 mark of the third period on an unassisted goal by Nicole Germaine. But it is never over until the final horn as Mott fired a shot off at the 18:25 mark for her second goal of the day, tying the game up 3-3. Sophomore Skye Kelly and freshman Payge Pena charted the assists on the goal.
A tie game after regulation sent it into overtime with the score remaining 3-3 after overtime for the tie. The teams then headed to a shootout as SCSU took the shootout 1-0. Freshman Lauren Hespenheide scored in round two for the 1-0 shootout win.
Earning back-to-back starts and goalie of record for St. Cloud was junior Julie Friend posting 36 saves, while MSU's Erin Krichiver tallied 28 saves. Friend sees her record move to 3-15-3 on the season. Minnesota State outshot St. Cloud in the game by a final margin of 39-to-31.
