Huskies Host Bemidji State in Final Regular Season Series

St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State women's hockey is set to host the final regular season series of the 2013-14 campaign this weekend in the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center against the Bemidji State Beavers. Game times are set for 7:07 p.m. and 3:07 p.m. respectively.

THE RECORD: The Huskies hold a 4-24-4 overall record and a 3-20-3-2 record good for 14 points in the ever-grueling WCHA coming into their series against Bemidji State. St. Cloud currently sits in eighth place in the WCHA rankings.
LAST TIME OUT: The Huskies ended their final regular season road series Feb. 7-8 as they took on WCHA rival Minnesota State. With both teams sitting tied for seventh place in the conference standings the series was up for grabs. A late comeback by Mankato in the third earned the Mavericks a 4-2 victory over St. Cloud on Friday. The Huskies came back though to battle to a 3-3 tie in overtime and then won the shootout 1-0, earning two points on the weekend in the WCHA. Scoring back-to-back goals for St. Cloud on Friday (Feb. 7) night was freshman Lauren Hespenheide. A scoreless game on Friday until the 14:08 mark of the first period when Hespenheide fired a shot into the back of the net after getting her own rebound for a 1-0 lead. It was an all freshmen goal with Payge Pena and Christa Moody earning the assists. Her second goal came with only :13 seconds left in the second period, making it a 2-0 game. On Saturday (Feb. 8), it was a battle by both teams as they traded goals for three periods. The Huskies were trailing 1-0 coming out in the second period but played with some tenacity to make it a 1-1 game at the 8:19 mark. St. Cloud was on a power-play opportunity as senior Cari Coen wound up from the top of the left face-off circle with junior Audrey Hanmer down in front of the net to direct the puck in for the score. Molli Mott found the back of the net at the 4:13 mark of the third making it a 2-2 game and then came back to once again tie the game up 3-3 at 18:25 mark for her second goal of the day. A 3-3 tie held through overtime for the tie. In the shootout it was Hespenheide scoring in round two for the 1-0 shootout win. The all-time series between the Huskies and Mavericks is now even at 29-29-7. Earning back-to-back starts and goalie of record against MSU was junior Julie Friend posting a total 69 saves. Friend now holds a 3-15-3 record on the season.

All-Time Series: Looking into the weekend at the Huskies match-up against Bemidji State, SCSU leads the all-time series with a 30-27-7 record that dates back to Jan. 22, 1999.
Ranking: Bemidji State is currently ranked sixth in the WCHA ranking with 24 points. In national polls Bemidji State is not ranked.
Beavers' Leaders: BSU is led by sophomore Kaitlyn Tougas as she has tallied 19 points (7g, 12a) this season in 31 games played. Tougas has posted 78 shots on goal and defensively has 28 blocks. Senior Tess Dusik follows with 13 points (7g, 6a) on the season in 32 games played. Between the pipes for the Beavers it is freshman Brittni Mowat as she has a 10-16-3 record. Mowat holds a save percentage of .918 (770 svs) and a goals against average of 2.44.
PREVIOUS MEETINGS: The last time the teams met was earlier this season in Bemidji on Jan. 10-11 where the teams split the series. St. Cloud took game one with a 3-1 victory and Bemidji came away with game two 2-1. During the 2012-13 campaign the teams met twice with the Huskies taking three of the four games against the Beavers.

The women's hockey series this weekend on Feb. 21-22 against Bemidji State is a Youth Hockey Jersey weekend. All Youth ages 2-14 wearing their youth hockey jersey will get in free to both games of the final regular season series.
