Huskies fall in 8-6 offensive showcase at Omaha

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team lost an 8-6 shootout at Nebraska Omaha on Feb. 1. The loss moved the Huskies' record to 14-6-4, 8-4-2-0 NCHC while the Mavericks improved to 10-12-2, 7-5-2-1 NCHC.
The Mavericks gained the early advantage at 2:33 of the first period with a goal by Justin Parizek with assists from James Polk and Jono Davis. Omaha pushed its early lead to 2-0 with a marker by Brock Montpetit at 4:36 of the first period with the solo assist going to Austin Ortega.
The Huskies broke the shutout at 7:15 of the first period with a power play goal by Kalle Kossila. Ethan Prow and Nic Dowd added assists on the play that made the score 2-1.
The Huskies tied the game at 11:27 of the first period with an even-strength goal by Jimmy Murray. Andrew Prochno provided the assist on the play, which was Murray's sixth goal of the season.
To close the first period, Kossila gave the Huskies a 3-2 lead with his 11th goal of the year at 18:15. Joey Benik notched the solo assist on the goal by Kossila.
The Mavericks rallied in the second period with two unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead. Nick Seeler scored at 3:28 of the second and Dominic Zombo scored at 7:20 of the second for the Mavs.
David Morley brought the Huskies back into the game at 10:10 of the second period with his seventh goal of the season. Benik and Prochno had assists on the the play, which made the tally 4-4.
Omaha regained the advantage at 12:46 of the second period with another marker by Zombo, which included assists from Jake Guentzel and Josh Archibald.
Kossila earned the hat trick at 3:12 of the third period with an unassisted goal that tied the game at 5-5. This was Kossila's 12th goal of the year and it marks the first time a Husky has scored a hat trick since David Morley had three against Nebraska Omaha on Dec. 7, 2012 at the Brooks Center.
The offensive showcase continued as the Mavericks scored their sixth goal at 5:26 of the third with a marker by Zahn Raubenheimer.
UNO stretched its lead to 7-5 with the hat trick goal by Zombo at 10:03 of the third period. Omaha added its eighth goal of the night with a tally by Brock Montpetit at 13:19 of the final period.
The Huskies ended the night's offense with a goal by Cory Thorson at 17:57 of the third. Brooks Bertsch and Ryan Papa added assists on the goal by Thorson.
In the game, UNO outshot the Huskies 44-32.
Next week the Huskies will host Denver at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Feb. 7-8.
