The #4 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (17-7-5, 11-5-3-0 NCHC) suffered a 4-3 loss at Miami University (11-15-3, 5-13-1-1 NCHC) on Friday, Feb. 21 at the Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio.
The setback was SCSU's first loss on a Friday night on the road in 2013-14 and it also allowed North Dakota to move into a tie for first place in the NCHC along with the Huskies. The two squads each have 36 league points after tonight's games.
The Huskies will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Feb. 22 with the second game at Miami University. The puck is scheduled to drop at the Steve Cady Arena at 6:07 p.m. (CT). In a hard-fought battle on Feb. 21, the Huskies opened the game's scoring in the first period with a power play marker by Jonny Brodzinski at 13:10. Assists on the play were added by teammates Ethan Prow and Andrew Prochno.
The goal was Brodzinski's 16th of the season, while Prow now has posted a point in his last eight outings for the Huskies. He now has 14 assists this winter, while Prochno continues to lead the defensive unit with 16 assists this year.
Miami was next up to advantage of the power play with a goal at 16:22 of the first period by Austin Czarnik. Anthony Louis and Justin Greenberg each had assists on the play, which tied the contest at 1-1.
Miami charged to a 2-1 lead at 10:17 of the second period with a goal by Sean Kuraly and then pushed its lead to 3-1 with a goal by Blake Coleman at 14:15 of the second.
The Huskies' finished the second period with a goal at 19:22 by Brooks Bertsch, which was assisted by Joe Rehkamp and Kevin Gravel. The goal was Bertsch's third of the season and it was the fourth assist of 2013-14 for Rehkamp and the 11th helper of the season for Gravel.
In the third period, Coleman notched the game winner at 7:57 with an unassisted goal by Coleman to make it 4-2. The proved to be the difference as the Huskies' finished the night's scoring with a power play goal by Nic Dowd at 18:52 of the third. Brodzinski and Kossila each had assists on the play for SCSU.
The goal was Dowd's team-leading 17th of the season, while Brodzinski now has 15 assists and 31 points. Both Brodzinski and Dowd lead the team in scoring this winter with 31 points each. The assist was also Kossila's 17th of 2013-14.
On the night, SCSU outshot the RedHawks 30-26. On the power play, SCSU was 2-of-5 and Miami was 1-of-3 in the game.
SCSU's Ryan Faragher was the goalie of record with 22 saves, while Jay Williams made 27 saves in the game for Miami. Of note, SCSU's Brodzinski was selected as the third star of the game.
