Women's Hockey Falls to Minnesota in First Round of WCHA Playoffs, 7-1

Minneapolis, Minn. – St. Cloud State women's hockey and #1 Minnesota ended the first round of the WCHA Playoffs Saturday afternoon as the Gophers took game two by a final score of 7-1.
The first period of play at Ridder Arena Saturday started just like Friday night with a scoreless game but that changed at the 10:14 mark with a power-play goal by Kelly Terry for a 1-0 lead. Shots on goal after the first period were in favor of Minnesota by one, 9-to-8.
St. Cloud was able to get some good looks in the first and in the start of the second period but was unable to get any to the back of the net.
In just 57 seconds the Gophers would move their lead from 1-0 game to a 5-0 lead over the Huskies in the second period. Their goals spanned from the 11:31 mark to the 12:28 mark of the period.
St. Cloud was able to get on the board in the second at the 17:44 mark as senior Julia Gilbert fired a shot from the crease to make it a 5-1 game. Senior teammate Molli Mott would be credited with the assist on the goal.
Minnesota put up two more goals in the third period to seal a 7-1 victory over the Huskies to end the first round of the WCHA playoffs.
Earning her 25th start of the season and goalie of record for St. Cloud was junior Julie Friend recording 16 saves, while the Gophers' Amanda Leveille tallied 11 saves for the win. Coming into the game for the Huskies at the 13:40 mark of the second period was sophomore Katie Fitzgerald to post 19 saves and 26:20 minutes of play. Friend ends the 2013-14 campaign with a 3-18-4 season record.
St. Cloud State ends the 2013-14 campaign with a 4-27-5 overall record and a 3-21-4-2 record in the ever-grueling Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA).
