#4 SCSU Men's Hockey to Host Miami in NCHC Playoff Action

The #4 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (21-8-5, 15-6-3-0 NCHC) will open postseason play with the first round games in the NCHC tournament at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center (5,371 cap./200x100) this weekend against Miami University (12-19-3, 6-17-1-1 NCHC). The best-of-three series will open on Friday, March 14 with a 7:37 p.m. game. The series will continue on Saturday, March 15 at 7:07 p.m. and, if needed, the third and deciding game will begin at 7:07 p.m. on Sunday, March 16 at the Brooks Center. The winner of the series will advance to the 2014 NCHC Frozen Face-off, which will take place at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis on March 21-22. Of note, SCSU is the number one seed in the NCHC playoffs, while Miami is the number eight seed.
THE CHAMPS: St. Cloud State University captured the inaugural regular season championship of the NCHC with a weekend sweep at Colorado College. The Huskies finished the year with a first place mark of 15-6-3-0 in the always rugged NCHC. SCSU posted 48 league points to win the Penrose Trophy, while North Dakota trailed in second place with 45 points. This marked the second consecutive season that SCSU has won a regular season conference title. In 2013, the Huskies won the WCHA regular season championshp. These are the first two regular season league titles claimed by the Huskies since they moved to the NCAA DI level in 1987-88.

THREE-PEAT: Jonny Brodzinski scored his first career hat trick with a three-goal night at Colorado College on March 7. He ended the weekend with SCSU's fourth goal in a 4-1 win on March 8. On the season, Brodzinski currently leads the team with 20 goals and 39 points. This marks Brodzinski second consecutive season with 20-or-more goals. He now has 42 goals, 30 assists and 72 points in two years as a Husky.
20-20 VISION: The Huskies' 7-4 victory at CC was their 20th of the season. This marks the 11th time since moving to the Division I level in 1987-88 that the Huskies have won 20-or-more games in a season. Under the leadership of head coach Bob Motzko, the Huskies have won 20-or-more games five times since 2005-06. Last year, SCSU posted a 25-16-1 overall record on their way to an appearance at the 2013 NCAA Frozen Four.
FAB FINN: Sophomore forward Kalle Kossila hit a career game-high with his four assists in the Huskies' 7-4 win on Mar. 8. This marked the first time a SCSU player had four assists in a game since Drew LeBlanc had four assists against Quinnipiac on Oct. 30, 2010. On the season, Kossila leads the Huskies with 23 helpers. He has posted 36 points (13g/26a) this year and has a total of 69 points in two seasons at SCSU with 28 goals and 41 assists.
BIG NIGHT: Joey Benik had an epic night on March 7 as he posted two goals and three assists for a career game-high of five points. This marks the first time since Andrew Gordon on Nov. 18, 2006 against Clarkson that a Husky player has posted five points in a game. In 2013-14, Benik has scored 12 goals and 14 assists for the Huskies.
HOT HAND: Jonny Brodzinski will bring a seven-game point streak into the Huskies' game next Friday against Miami. He has 13 points and six goals during the last seven games for the Huskies. Of note, Brodzinski has 11 goals and 14 points in 8 games played vs. CC during his career.
DOWD DATA: Nic Dowd posted his 117th career point with a goal against CC on March 8. He currently ranks 16th in the team career scoring records. In 2013-14, Dowd has 19 goals and 17 assists for a total of 36 points. He needs four more points to surpass his career season-high of 39 points he hit in 2012-13. Dowd has already hit a new career season-high with his 19 goals this season.
FUTURE KVSC TRIVIA QUESTION: Sophomore Jimmy Murray will go down in the records as the player to score the game winning goal in the game that clinched SCSU's first-ever NCHC regular season championship. Murray scored twice over the weekend at Colorado College and now has 12g/10a this season.
