Miami Upsets St. Cloud State in NCHC Playoffs, 4-3

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #4 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (21-10-5, 15-7-3 NCHC) saw its run in the NCHC postseason playoffs end on Saturday, March 15 with a 4-3 loss against Miami University (14-19-3, 7-17-1 NCHC) at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Redhawks clinch the best of three first round series and will now advance to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff next weekend at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis. The Huskies will now await the results of next weekend's games and the upcoming NCAA tournament selection date next Sunday.
The two squads opened the first period with a strong defensive showing as the score stood 0-0 after the first 20 minutes of play. SCSU outshot the Redhawks 12-6 in the period.
In the second period, SCSU's Kevin Gravel put the Huskies on the board with an unassisted goal at 10:30 of the period. SCSU pushed its lead to 2-0 with a marker by Jimmy Murray at 17:22, which was assisted by David Morley and Ethan Prow.
SCSU brought a 2-0 lead into the final period before the Redhawks broke the shutout with a goal by Sean Kuraly at 3:59, which was assisted by Riley Barber and Chris Joyaux. Miami knotted the game at 2-2 with a goal by Austin Czarnik at 7:42 of the third.
The Huskies regained the lead at 9:20 of the third period with a 5x3 power play goal by Nic Dowd, which included a pair of assists from Gravel and Kalle Kossila. The goal was Dowd's 21st of the season and it was Kossila's team-leading 25 helper of the year.
Miami's Anthony Louis tied the game at 4-4 at the 12:08 mark of the third period with a power play goal, which set the table for the game winning goal with 19:57 left in the third period by MU's Justin Greenberg. His last second shot was assists by Louis and Matt Joyaux.
In the game, SCSU was outshot by Redhawks 30-28, and both squads were both 1-of-3 on the power play. In the nets, Ryan Faragher was the goalie of record for the Huskies with 26 saves and Ryan McKay was the game winner with 25 saves.
