Slattery Leads Huskies to 6-4 Victory over Merrimack College

North Andover, MA. --- The St. Cloud State Huskies (1-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) start the season with a 6-4 victory over Merrimack College (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East) on Friday Oct. 2.
Senior forward, Hanna Brodt, opened up scoring with just over half of the second left to play. Senior, Lexi Slattery and her junior defense partner, Christa Moody were awarded the assists on the play. Slattery capitalized just 6 minutes later, extending the lead 2-0 for the Huskies. The Huskies were sent to the box and Merrimack took advantage as they closed the lead to 2-1 at the 17:57 mark of the second.
Merrimack took the lead from the Huskies as they opened the final period of play with three quick power play goals. SCSU's Slattery scored her second goal of the game when the Huskies were awarded a power play, gaining momentum back for St. Cloud. The lone assist was given to junior forward, Lauren Hespenheide. Hespenheide followed her assist with a goal which tied the game 4-4. Slattery was given the assist, which marks her 4th point in 4 goals. Moody followed her partners lead and put the puck past Merrimack goaltender, scoring her first career goal and the game winning goal with 6:11 left to play. Sophomore, Brittney Anderson got the first assist and Hespenheide picked up her second point of the game. Junior, Caroline Markstrom, closed off the game by scoring her first career goal, making it a final score of 6-4.
St. Cloud State saw 14:00 minutes of power play time, while Merrimack played 12:00 minutes with a man advantage.
Katie Fitzgerald started off the season between the pipes for the Huskies, where she faced 23 shots in 60 minutes of play.
The series continues tomorrow night at 1:00 p.m. (CT).
