
Huskies Start Season with Series Sweep Over Merrimack College

The St. Cloud State Huskies (2-0-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) gain a series sweep over Merrimack College (0-2-0, 0-0-0 Hockey East) with a 6-2 win on Saturday Oct. 3.
Merrimack College was first on the board with a quick goal just 25 seconds into the game. Junior defense, Alex Makaric, sent a slap shot from the point past Merrimack goaltender to tie the game 1-1 at 7:22 in the first period. This marks Makaric's first career goal. Assists were awarded to Christa Moody and Brittney Anderson, both getting their second assists of the series. Julia Tylke, a freshman from Delafield, Wisconsin, scored her first college goal sending the Huskies to a 2-1 lead with 1:46 left to play in the first period. Anderson tallied her second assist of the game while senior, Molly Illikainen, gained her first.
St. Cloud found themsevles short early in the second period and Merrimack capitalized on their man advantage, tying the game at 2 goals, 2:00 minutes into the period. The Huskies responded when freshman, Hannah Potrykus, scored her first career and game winning goal at 8:14 in the second. Anderson picked up her third assist of the game and sophomore, Alyssa Erickson, got her first. The Huskies built on their momentum when junior forward, Payge Pena, scored the fourth goal of the game after tipping Makaric's shot from the point. Hanna Brodt was also awarded an assist on the goal.
The Huskies started the final period with a power play advatage and just 31 seconds in, Erickson put the puck in the back of the net. Senior's Lexi Slattery and Illikainen earned the assists. The final goal of the game was put in by freshman forward, Suvi Ollikainen, who was the 4th SCSU player to get their first career goal in the game. Illikainen recorded her third assist, while Tylke got her second point of the game.
Freshman goalie, Taylor Crosby, played her first game in net with St. Cloud and got her first win in the red and white. She faced 23 shots in 60:00 minutes of play.
The Huskies return to the ice on Oct. 9-10 to take on the Minnesota Gophers in Minneapolis.
