#17 St. Cloud State men's hockey charts 6-2 win over Alberta

St. Cloud, Minn. - The #17 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (0-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) opened its 2015-16 season with a 6-2 exhibition victory over the University of Alberta (4-2) on Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The Huskies made an early statement in the contest as sophomore forward Patrick Russell scored a :44 of the first period with an assist from freshman Patrick Newell. SCSU then extended its lead to 2-0 with a goal by senior Joey Benik at 6:02 of the first period with a pair of assists from senior David Morley and sophomore Ryan Papa. The Golden Bears broke the shutout at 14:42 of the first period with a marker by Kruise Reddick before Newell notched the game winner at 16:32 with assists from Russell and rookie blueliner Jon Lizotte.
Junior Ben Storm ended the first period attack with a goal at 18:35 that made the total 4-1 in favor of SCSU. Senior captain Ethan Prow and junior Daniel Tedesco each had assists on the play for the Huskies.
In the second period, SCSU continued its push with a goal by sophomore Blake Winiecki at 4:53, which included assists from Morley and freshman Jacob Benson. Alerta narrowed the gap to 5-2 with a goal by Dylan Bredo at 5:40 of the second period before Prow completed the night's scoring with a power play goal at 14:48 of the second period. Assists on the play were added by senior Kalle Kossila and Benik.
On the night, Alberta outshot SCSU 34-25. Huskies' goalie Charlie Lindgren earned the victory with 16 saves in 31:26 of play, while teammate Rasmus Reijola completed the game in net for SCSU with 16 saves and no goals allowed in the final 28:34 minutes. Marc-Olivier Daigle started the game for Alberta and posted 12 saves and allowed five goals, while Ryan Demharter finished the game with seven saves n the closing 28:34 of play. SCSU was 1-2 on the power play and Alberta was 0-2 on the advantage in the game.
Of note, this marked the first victory for the Huskies over Alberta in three total meetings in the series. Alberta is the two-time defending CIS defending national champions.
The Huskies wil open regular season play on Oct. 9-10 with a road trip to the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage, Alaska. SCSU will play Alaska Fairbanks at 8 p.m. (CT) on Oct. 9 and then complete the series on Oct. 10 with a 10 p.m. (CT) game against host Alaska Anchorage.
