#9 St. Cloud State men's hockey rolls to 5-2 win at WMU

The #9 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (7-2-0, 3-0-0 NCHC) continued its early season success with a solid 5-2 victory at Western Michigan University (4-5-1, 2-3-0 NCHC) on Friday, Nov. 13 at the Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.
A pair of third period empty net goals allowed the Huskies gain the upper hand in a strong defensive battle between the Huskies and Broncos. The two teams will complete their NCHC weekend series on Saturday, Nov. 14 with a 6 p.m. (CT) match at WMU. Fans can listen to the game on KCML FM 99.9 (www.lite999.com) and they can watch on NCHC.tv/scsu (PPV video stream).
The Huskies opened the contest on Nov. 13 with an even-strength goal by senior forward Jimmy Murray, who scored at 6:07 of the second period with an assist from sophomore forward Patrick Russell and freshman blueliner Will Borgen. The goal broke a 0-0 deadlock that saw both the Huskies and Broncos chart eight shots in the first period.
WMU tied the game at 12:45 of the second period with a power play marker by Nolan LaPorte. Mathes Iacopelli and Frederick Tiffels had assists on the play that made it 1-1.
In the third period, SCSU took advantage of a five-minute major penalty taken by WMU's Scott Moldenhauer at :16 of the period when senior Joey Benik scored on the power play at 3:46. This was Benik's third goal of the season and he was assisted on the play by senior forward Kalle Kossila and senior defender Ethan Prow.
Murray brought home the game winer for SCSU with his second goal of the night at 6:44 of the third period. He was set up with a picture perfect pass by Prow and the second assist was credited to rookie forward Robby Jackson.
The Huskies rode the 3-1 lead into the closing minutes of the game before an empty net provided sophomore forward Judd Peterson with a chance to chart his team-leading sixth goal of the year at 16:48. The lone assist on the play was earned by Prow, who gained the playmaker with his third assist of the night. WMU added a second power play goal at 18:51 with a goal by Tiffels that made it 4-2.
In the last minute of regulation time, Russell finished things off with another empty net goal at 19:34. Kossila posted his team-leading eighth assist on the play.
On the night, SCSU outshot WMU 29-28 as netminder Charlie Lindgren had 26 saves and win. He is now 6-2-0 on the season for the Huskies in the nets. Collin Olson had 23 saves for WMU in the contest.
On the power play, SCSU was 1-4 and WMU was 2-2.
