#7 St. Cloud State sweeps Gophers on Nov. 29, 7-4

The #7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (11-3-0, 5-1-0 NCHC) completed a weekend sweep at the University of Minnesota (4-7-0, 0-0-0 B1G) with a 7-4 victory at Mariucci Arena on Sunday, Nov. 29. The victory tonight, coupled with a 3-2 win on Friday, Nov. 27, marked the first time that the Huskies have earned a regular season series sweep at Mariucci Arena.
The Huskies paced the Gophers throughout the game despite being outshot 33-26. SCSU did take advantage of seven power play chances and tallied four power play goals in the game - including two power play goals on a five minute major penalty in the second period that helped SCSU post a 5-2 margin in the game.
In the first period, SCSU gained a 1-0 lead at 8:26 with a goal by Kalle Kossila that included assists from Patrick Russell and Jimmy Murray. This was Kossila's third goal of the season.
The Gophers charged back to tie the game 1-1 with a power play effort by Jake Bischoff at 11:18 of the first period. SCSU quickly regained the lead at 13:47 with a goal by David Morley. Assists were added on the play by Patrick Newell and Joey Benik.
The goal was Morley's seventh of the season and it was his 97th career point at SCSU.
In the second period, Judd Peterson posted a power play goal at 1:11 with helpers from Benik and Prow to make it 3-1. The Gophers got back on the board at 4:28 of the second with a goal by Tyler Sheehy that made it 3-2.
Thanks to a five minute major penalty and game misconduct call on UM's Nick Seeler, the Huskies potent power pushed the lead to 5-2 in the second. Peterson tallied first on the long advantage with his ninth goal of the season at 5:48. Prow and Kossila each had assists on the play.
Russell made it 5-2 with his power play goal that was assisted by Prow and Peterson. The goal was Russell's seventh of the season and it also marked the third assist of the night for Prow. Minnesota completed the period with a power play goal by Leon Bristedt at 17:29 of the second.
In the third period, the Huskies added their fourth power play goal of the night with a marker by Blake Winiecki at 9:38. Assists on the play were added by Morley and Will Borgen. This was Morley's 98th career point at SCSU. Ryan Norman helped Minnesota back into the fray with his goal at 15:21 of the third period, which made the score 6-4.
Minnesota pulled its goalie with about 4:00 left in regulation but an empty netter by Winiecki iced the contest at 7-4 for the Huskies. Kossila earned the solo assist on the play for SCSU. The goal was Winiecki's fourth of the season and it was Kossila's 13th assist of the year. In his sterling career at SCSU, Kossila now has 115th career points and 78 career assists.
On the evening, SCSU was 4-7 on the advantage and UM was 2-2. The Huskies now rank third in the nation on the power play at 29.8% (17/51). The Huskies also rank third in the country on offense with an average of 4.29 goals per game. In the nets, Charlie Lindgren charted his 10 win of the season with 29 saves in the nets. Eric Schierhorn made 15 saves and allowed five goals in the first 40:00 of play before being relieved by Nick Lehr, who allowed one goal in the final period of play.
