St. Cloud State men's hockey to host #5 Omaha

The St. Cloud State University Huskies men's hockey team (13-14-1, 8-9-1-0 NCHC) will continue its 2014-15 season with a pair of conference games against the #5 University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks (17-8-3, 11-6-1 NCHC) on Feb. 20-21, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn. The action will get underway on Feb. 20 at 7:37 p.m. (CT), while the pucks drops on Feb. 21 at 7:07 p.m. (CT). The game on Feb. 20 will be televised live on the SCSU Sports Network on Charter Cable Charter 423/823 and on Comcast Cable 999 in the Twin Cities. The game on Feb. 21 will be televised live on Fox Sports North and Fox College Sports. Please check your local listings for details.

TROPHY TOUR:  The coveted NCHC Frozen Face-off trophy will be on display at the HBNHC during the upcoming series against Nerbraska Omaha. Fans should arrive early for the games as they will have a chance to get up close to trophy and have their photo taken with this major award. Â
AGAINST THE MAVERICKS: The Huskies own an 8-8-2 record against Omaha since the series started with a 2-1 win in St. Cloud on Jan. 9, 1998…earlier this season, the Huskies lost a pair of games in Omaha (3-2 and 5-3 on Dec. 12-13)…SCSU is 7-2-1 in games played against the Mavericks in St. Cloud…SCSU is 2-3-0 in its last five outings against Omaha and 4-6-0 in the last 10 games in this series...Austin Ortega leads Omaha with 30 points (16g/14a) and Jake Guentzel (10g/17a)...Ryan Massa has been Omaha's top goalie this season with a 2.04 GAA and a 12-5-3 record this winter between the pipes.

SPLIT AT DULUTH:  SCSU charted a weekend split at Minnesota Duluth on Feb. 13-14. The Huskies opened the weekend with a 4-2 loss against UMD. SCSU gained a 1-0 lead with a first period marker by Blake Winiecki and went into the third period that lead before the Bulldogs rallied with four third period goals...on Feb. 14, SCSU earned the split with a 4-1 win at UMD. David Morley scored the game's first two goals. Patrick Russell added a power play marker in the 3rd period to give SCSU a 3-1 lead before Joey Benik iced the game with a later ENG. Charlie Lindgren made 21 saves to gain the victory, which improved SCSU's record to 13-14-1, 8-9-1 NCHC.Â
#JB4HB:  SCSU junior Jonny Brodzinski currently ranks among the top four three getters in this year's Vote for Hobey fan poll (as of Feb. 16)...Brodzinski currently leads the Huskies with 17 goals and 29 points this season. In overall games played this season, Brodzinski leads all NCHC players with 17 goals and he ranks third in the league with 29 points. At the national level, Brodzinski ranks 11th in the nation with .61 goals per game (17 in 28 games played). He also leads the country with 10 power play goals this season...Brodzinski ranks ninth in the team records now with 60 career goals and he ranks 23rd in the team records with 103 career points. He hit his 100th career point on Jan. 31 at CC.
ADVANTAGE SCSU:  On the power play, SCSU currently ranks sixth in the nation with a 22.9 percent power play rate (27-of-118). SCSU also ranks among the top 8 least penalized teams in DI hockey this winter with an average of 9.4 penalty minutes per game (264 penalty minutes in 28 games played).MORLEY MAKES IT SIX:  SCSU's David Morley brings a six-game point streak into the series against Omaha. At UMD, Morley posted 2 assists and 2 goals to earn NCHC Offensive Player of the Week notice. Morley has carded 11 points in the last six games, which includes six goals and five assists. He has posted two points apiece in each of SCSU's last four games played. On the season, Morley has 11g/11a and he now has 31g/43a in 97 games played during his career at SCSU.
GREAT START:  Freshman Patrick Russell has enjoyed a strong start for the Huskies in 2014-15. He currently ranks second among NCHC freshman (overall games played) with 22 points (9g/13a). Â
PROCHNO POINTS: Andrew Prochno added a pair of assists during his trip to UMD on Feb. 13-14. In his career, Prochno now ranks second among SCSU defenseman with 73 assists. He moves ahead of Nick Jensen, who had 71 assists during his time at SCSU from 2010-13. Kelly Hultgren is SCSU's all-time defensive assist man with 79 from 1991-95. Prochno has 89 career points during his time at SCSU.
HUSKIES' NOTES:  Junior blueliner Ethan Prow played in his 100th career game on Feb. 14. Prow has 9g/41a during his career at SCSU...rookie Nathan Widman paces the Huskies this winter with a +8 ranking on the plus/minus...the Huskies have outshot their opponents 862-764 this winter and they have outscored their opponents 80-71 this season...Joey Benik also brings a six-game point streak into the games against Omaha. He has charted 3g/9a during those six games...Jonny Brodzinski has played in 108 consecutive games during his college career and has not missed a game during his three season with the Huskies...Joey Benik leads the Huskies with 113 shots on goal this season while Jonny Brodzinski is second with 110 shots on target.
