2/20/2015 5:52:00 PM | Women's Hockey
Madison, Wis. --- St. Cloud State upsets the #4 nationally ranked Wisconsin Badgers in a hard fought battle on Jan. 20, 2015.Â
In his first season as head of the St. Cloud State Women's Hockey team, Eric Rud, along side Steve Macdonald and Jinelle Siergiej, coached the Huskies to their first win, in five years, against the Badgers.Â
Julie Friend had a stand out performance in between the pipes, as she stopped 52 of the 53 shots the Badgers tested her with. As Friend plays in her last regular season series in the red and white, she comes out with one of the biggest wins of her college career and first win against the Badgers in her four seasons with the Huskies.Â
SCSU came to play and put themselves in a leading position when freshman forward, Alyssa Erickson, stepped up and found the back of the net, which marked her third goal of the season. Assists were given to seniors, Abby Ness and Amanda Arbogast.Â
The Huskies carried their momentum through the second, shutting down Wisconsin's 22 shot offense, and keeping the lead 1-0 going into the final period of the game.Â
As the Badgers pressed for a comeback with just minutes left to play, sophomore forward, Payge Pena, found a way to put the puck in the open net and extended St. Cloud's lead to 2-0.Â
Wisconsin broke Friend's shutout with 15 seconds left on the clock, but the Huskies strong defense prevailed and stole the win from one of the best teams in the nation.
The series continues on Sunday, Jan. 22, in Madison, Wisconsin, with a 12:00 p.m. puck drop.
