2011-12: Played in 23 games with 21 starts as the Huskies goalie in her rookie season ... Recorded 599 saves with an .872 save percentage ... Ended the season with a 5-16-0 record ... Earned her first win in her collegiate career against Union on Oct. 1 ... Had a season high of 43 saves with two goals allowed in a 1-2 loss against Duluth on Jan. 28 ... Recorded three wins over Minnesota State ... Earned the sweep on Minnesota State with only allowing a total of three goals and had 67 saves total ... Before SCSU: An All-Conference and All-Metro goalie, Friend was named her squad’s Most Valuable Player after leading her team to a Lake Conference Championship and Minnesota State Championship during her prep stint. Friend, who posted over 1,000 saves in her Skippers career, also exceled off the ice. She was an academic letterwinner since 2007 and enjoyed mentoring youth hockey players, was a member of Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and was also a First Mate Senior Leader. Coached by Eric Johnson, Friend was named the Minneapolis Star Tribune Athlete of the Week in January of 2009 and also garnered the KARE 11 Athlete of the Week honors twice in February of 2010 and 2011.
Personal: A native of Minnetonka and 2011 graduate from Minnetonka High School. The daughter of Doug Friend and Carol Lund, Julie was the starting goaltender for MHS from 2007-11. Lists her parents and past coaches as greatest influences on her career. Friend is majoring in television journalism and sports and recreation management at SCSU.
