St. Cloud State women's hockey opens season with 4-3 victory

The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team kicked off its 2015-16 season with a 4-3 exhibition game victory over the Minnesota Whitecaps at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Saturday, Sept. 26, in St. Cloud, Minn.
Molly Illikainen led the Huskies to victory with one goal and one assist in the contest, while freshman Hannah Potrykus posted the game winner at 12:48 of the third period for SCSU.
The Huskies opened the evening with a goal by Vanessa Spataro at 12:55 of the first period. She was assisted on the play by Christa Moody and Lauren Hespenheide. SCSU goalie Katie Fitzgerald was solid in the opening rounds of play as she provided the Huskies with 30:30 minutes of shutout hockey while making 16 saves in the first two periods.
The Whitecaps broke the tie at 2:16 of the third period with a goal by Winny Brown. The Whitecaps pushed their lead to 2-1 at 6:19 of the third with a goal by Allie Thunstrom.
SCSU tallied at 10:15 of the third period with Illikainen's power play goal, which was assisted by Julia Tylke and Alexandra Makaric. Rookie Suvi Ollikainen charted the go ahead go at 10:32 of the third with SCSU assists by Illikainen and Tylke. The Huskies added the game winner at 12:48 of the third with a marker by Potrykus, which was assisted by Alyssa Erickson and Ivy Dynek.
The Whitecaps completed the evening's offense with the final goal at 19:02 by Sarah Erickson.
In the nets, Taylor Crosby completed the night for SCSU with 19 saves, while Alli Altmann had 33 saves for the Caps. SCSU was 1-2 on the power play and Minnesota was 0-2 in the advantage in the game.
SCSU will continue its 2015-16 season on Oct. 2-3 with a weekend set at Merrimack College.
