#5 Huskies battle back to gain 1-1 tie at UMD on Jan. 16

Russell goal in 3x3 OT gives Huskies extra league point
The #5 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (18-5-1, 10-3-1 NCHC) completed its first session of 3x3 overtime with a winning result as a goal by Patrick Russell with :33.6 left on the clock gave the Huskies the extra league point after a 1-1 tie game at Minnesota Duluth (8-8-5, 5-6-3 NCHC) on Jan. 16.
This marked the first time in 2015-16 that the Huskies have gone to overtime in a game and it was also the first time that SCSU was able to experience the new 3x3 overtime format after the game ended in a 1-1 deadlock after the first OT session. SCSU will now receive an extra league point, which moves SCSU's first place league point total to 32.
UMD gained the early lead in the contest with an unassisted goal by Dominic Toninato at 8:45 of the first period.
In the second period, SCSU tied the contest at 1-1 with a goal by by Joey Benik at 10:28. Assists on the play were tallied by Patrick Newell and David Morley. The point was Benik's 100th career point at SCSU. He is the 29th SCSU player at the DI level to score 100 points and the third player this season to join the SCSU 100-point club. Benik now has 49 goals and 51 assists during his career at SCSU.
SCSU was able to stay in the contest throughout the night thanks to another stellar effort in the nets by Charlie Lindgren. SCSU was outshot 39-22 in the game including a first period that saw the Huskies get outshot 13-5 by the Bulldogs. On the night, Lindgren made 38 saves while Kasimir Kaskisuo had 21 saves in the nets for the Bulldogs. On the season, Lindgren now owns a 17-5-1 record.
In a game that saw only three penalties called, the Huskies were 0-2 on the power play and UMD was 0-1 on the power play. On the weekend, SCSU was 7-7 on the penalty kill against the Bulldogs.
Next weekend the Huskies will host Western Michigan University in two NCHC games at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. On Jan. 22, the game will start at 7:37 p.m. and the game on Jan. 23 will start at 7:07 p.m. Great tickets are available for both of these games and you can purchase them online at www.scsutickets.com or by calling 1-877-SCSUTIX.
